Harland & wolf shipyards

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Famously known for its construction and housing of the new "Olympic class" luxury liners RMS Titanic and RMS Olympic. In 1909 Harland & Wolfe won a contract with the White Star Line to create every new vessel White Star ordered. The first ship to be built under contract was the RMS Olympic followed by the Titanic and RMS Brittanic and Majestic. Under the contract White Star emloyed over 3,000 Irish shipbuilders which included wood workers and other craftsmen. The project of building the second Olympic Class liner Titanic fell under the shipyard's owner Thomas Andrews who designed the Titanic. After the horrific sinking of Titanic, Harland & Wolfe was no longer needed when White Star joined with The Cunard Line. This move created mass unemloyment for Ireland for years to come.
