Harjit Singh
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Harjit Singh Sidhu (born circa 1993) is a man from Abbotsford, BC who has been involved in the Judy Sgro immigration scandal. Singh, a pizzeria owner, claimed that he provided a favour of pizza delivery for Sgro's reelection campaign, in exchange for Sgro's intervention in his immigration hearing.
This accusation, among others, had led to Sgro's resignation as immigration minister. Sgro maintains that no such agreement was made, and has filed a defamation suit against Singh.
Federal Court of Canada Justice Michael Phelan upheld a deportation order for Singh on February 2, 2005. Singh had been in Canada since 1988 as a visitor. Past convictions in India of kidnapping and passport forgery kept him from being allowed permanent resident status. He had also been found liable for $1 million in a civil trial for credit card fraud.
On May 10, Singh retracted his allegations in a letter of apology to Sgro.
He died in November 2007.
