Harishchandrapur is a community development bloc and an assembly constituency in Malda district in the Indian state of West Bengal. [1]

In the 2001 census, Harishchandrapur – I CD Bloc had a population of 162,369, of which 83,122 were males and 79,247 were females. Harishchandrapur – II had a population of 198,127, of which 102,075 were males and 96,052 were females. Decadal growth for the period 1991-2001 was 25.06% for Harishchadrapur I and 26.13% for Harishchandrapur II, against 24.77% in Malda district.[2]Decadal growth in West Bengal was 17.84%.[3]

Harishchandrapur I & II are two intermediate panchayats in Malda district. Village panchayats under Harischandrapur I are – Barui, Bhingole, Harischandrapur, Kushidha, Mahendrapur, Rashidabad and Tulsihatta. Village panchayats under Harischandrapur II are – Daulatpur, Doulatnagar, Islampur, Malior, Masaldaha, Sadlichak, Sultannagar and Valuka. [4]

In the 2006 elections to the state assembly, Tajmul Hossain of AIFB won the Harishchandrapur seat defeating Mostaque Alam of INC. In 2001 Mosraque Alam of INC defeated Birendra Kumar Moitra of AIFB. Birendra Kumar Moitra of FBL defeated Mostaque Alam of INC in 1996, and Abdul Wahed of INC in 1991 and 1987. In 1982, Abdul Wahed of INC defeated Subhash Chaudhury of FBL. In 1977, Birendra Kumar Moitra of Janata Party defeated Mohammad Elias Razi.

Harishchandrapur is part of Raiganj (Lok Sabha constituency)[5]
