Hardin Richard Runnels (August 30, 1820December 25, 1873) was a U.S. political figure. He served as the 6th Governor of Texas between 1857 and 1859. His defeat of Sam Houston in the 1857 election for governor marked the only time that Houston ever lost an election. Runnels favored secession from the Union and re-establishing the slave trade. Runnels was later defeated by Houston for the governor's office the following election.
