HardRadio

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

HardRadio was the first .com Internet-only radio station.[1] It debuted on December 31, 1995 with a hard rock and heavy metal format. At launch, the station exclusively used Xing Streamworks technology and later utilized Real Audio, Microsoft Netshow (later Windows Media), and was the first QuickTime streaming partner with Apple Computer.[citation needed]

HardRadio was the first internet-only radio station licensed by both ASCAP and BMI, the first internet-only radio station with broadcast trade journal playlist reporting status, the first internet-only radio station serviced by the recording labels, the first internet-only radio station to feature world premieres of new artist releases, and the first internet-only radio station featured in the Radio & Records trade journal (April 1996).[citation needed]

In 2007 Google Directory ranked HardRadio first in heavy metal radio and heavy metal reviews, and eleventh in overall music news and media content, ahead of Virgin Music.[1]
