Hard-Nut the Nigger was a comic strip in the UK comic The Beano, first appearing in the late 1930s.

The use of the word "nigger" was not particularly controversial in the UK at that time. Hard-Nut himself was a somewhat crude stereotype of a black man, his only distinguishing feature being an exceptionally hard head capable of breaking anything or bearing any weight (hence his name).

Smiffy of the Bash Street Kids has the same ability to break things with his thick skull.
