Haradasun

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Haradasun (foaled 28 November, 2003) is a notable Australian Thoroughbred brown horse (by Fusaichi Pegasus from Circles of Gold). He is well-bred. His sire is a Kentucky Derby winning son of champion sire Mr Prospector who has enjoyed moderate success so far in his own stud career. His dam is an AJC Oaks winning daughter of champion sire Marscay, who ran second in the Caulfield Cup. Haradasun is named after the boxer, 'Fighting Harada.' His most significant wins include the 2007 G1 Doncaster Handicap and George Ryder Stakes. He is trained by Tony Vasil, who also trained his half-brother Elvstroem. He has been ridden by jockeys Glen Boss and Nash Rawiller. His earnings so far are over AUD$2.0 million.

[edit] Career

Haradasun won his only 2yo start at Swan Hill by 10-lengths. In his first start as a 3 year old, he impressively won the listed 1200 metre Vain Stakes at Caulfield in Melbourne. In his next start, he lost Miss Finland in the H.D.F. McNeill Quality, again at Caulfield over 1200 metres. Here he faced the reigning champion 2 year old from the previous season, Miss Finland in the McNeill Quality, again at Caulfield over 2000 metres.

Haradasun, ridden by Nash Rawiller, was defeated by 3yo-filly Catechuchu in the Schweppes Stakes on Blue Diamond Stakes day at Caulfield in February 2006. In next month, he finished 4th to Miss Finland in the Australian Guineas. Haradasun won the George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill in Sydney but Desert War just outfought Haradasun to win by two lengths in in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

[edit] Coolmore Stud buy-out

Coolmore, an international giant breeding company, bought a half share of $45 million Haradasun, and they removed Rawiller from committing with the horse lacking sufficient gate speed to rush forward and angle in. The company put Damien Oliver, Melbourne's experience jockey, on aggressive Haradasun for the rest of the 2007 season. After running several minor places, Haradasun finished third in the 2040m Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on October 27, 2007. Aidan O'Brien will take Haradasun into his stables next year to try to lift the fallen star's reputation after a Melbourne spring season which promised so much but delivered so little.
