plobb! is a single-player 2D freeware game based on BlitzMax[1]. The game involves the player guiding the small blob-shaped main character named "plobb" around the screen where he is attacked by enemy bubbles. The aim is to eliminate the bubbles and finally also the arch-enemy in order to win the game and regain plobb's freedom.
The game was created as a research project by Bastiaan van Rooden from nothing ltd., Switzerland, which develops other freeware games but also advergames among other products. It is available as a stand-alone offline game for download free of charge. First launched in 2005, the game was only available for Windows while a version compatible with Apple Mac OSX was developed in 2007[2]. The game is distributed via download from the website of nothing ltd.[3] as well as via link on other websites, including the website of Apple, where it figured as staff pick[4].
[edit] Game content
An introduction tells the story of plobb's captivation by his arch-enemy the Evil Motts of Psodor. In order to escape from Evil Motts' Castle of Nightmares plobb has, by spitting shots, to fight and eliminate the enemy bubbles that sap his energy.
[edit] Gameplay
[edit] Basic gameplay
The gameplay structure follows those of classic arcade shooters of the 80s, also known as Golden Age of Arcade Games, and resembles first and foremost the gameplay of Asteroids. As such it follows a simple and intuitive gameplay pattern. The player, acting by the avatar plobb throughout the game has to navigate around the bubbles that come crossing the screen and to aim shots at them by spitting in their direction. The player navigates plobb by placing the cursor in the direction of or directly on the target towards which plobb will then move and upon left-click also will emit shots. The speed with which plobb moves increases with the distance of the cursor to the actual position of plobb on the screen. The bubbles differ in size and react to being shot at by dividing into two smaller bubbles until disappearing completely. If plobb is touched by an enemy bubble he will lose energy.
The play is structured in 5 worlds with 5 levels each with the final fight between plobb and Evil Motts on a separate last level.
[edit] Special features
[edit] "Toxic bubbles"
If the enemy bubbles are not eliminated within the alloted time all the bubbles become "toxic". Then, not only will the bubbles kill plobb when touching regardless of the energy still left but they will also act more aggressively attacking plobb directly.
[edit] Bonus round
After having successfully completing a world there is a bonus round.
[edit] Power-ups
The elimination of a bubble can be rewarded with a special power up that has to be caught by the player first. By the elimination of a bubble plobb can be rewarded with a special power-up or bonus that has to be caught by the player first. The power-ups are temporary only.
- peppermint green power-up (2 versions): shots issuing as twos or fours so that enemy bubbles can be targeted not only in a direct line but at an angle of about 30 to 60° at a time.
- green with yellow arrow: spiky stars issuing instead of regular shots. those will take on the bubbles by themselves and eliminate them quickly.
- blue bubble power-up: regular shots become airy bubbles that don't disappear when hitting enemy bubbles but bounce off towards new targets.
- blue with white star: freezes the screen and the enemy bubbles so that they become immobile.
- golden bubble power-up: gives plobb golden dots that will circle around him, thus acting as bodyguards against approaching bubbles by pushing them off.
- orange power-up: plobb will be able to leave little winged dots trailing behind him that will act as buffers against enemy bubbles and weaken them.
- purple power-up: regular shots are replaced by little plobbs that cruise around for bubbles on their own.
- smiley power-up: plobb will get a "ghost" trailing behind him, issueing shots parallely to plobb.
- red with fast-forward-icon: machine-gun like, very fast shooting.
- red with yellow star: explosion eliminating all bubbles in its vicinity.
- black power-up: plobb loses ability to shoot but can eliminate bubbles by simply touching them.
[edit] Bonuses
- Hearts: extra energy
- Stars and gold chest: extra points
- Light blue clock face: extra time
- Question mark: any bonus
[edit] Game design
Although kept simply structured, the game design uses colours and shapes to the effect of creating candy store aesthetics. The generally round and colorful design can be considered a distinct characteristic of the plobb! game and an original game design concept[5].
