[edit] Prologue

A cold wind spread the air as Isamu’s body lay sprawled on the forest floor. Hana was crying uncontrollably over his corpse, reminiscing over years of the love she had lost. She knew she was not the only one, since this was the forest of Nagai Kanashisa; the forest of eternal sadness. It seemed like years since that fateful morning, the last time she ever saw Isamu.

It was such a sunny and cheerful morning that you couldn’t possibly think anything could go wrong. Hana was a beautiful, rosy-cheeked girl with flowers dancing all around her. Of course, she must have been fancied by a number of the men of Kakusutokoro, Hideaway Island. The man she loved was a young man named Isamu, who was as handsome as she was beautiful. They had been married one year earlier. “Hello, Isamu!” Hana called out to her handsome husband while twirling around beautifully with petals floating around her. “Will you come see the roses with me?” “Uh...” Isamu said. “I have to go to a picnic in Nagai Kanashisa with Netamu.” “Netamu?” Hana said, bewildered. “He’s my brother.” “He wasn’t at the wedding... Great! Can I come?” asked Hana, only to be told Netamu wanted time alone with him. If she was anybody but Hana, she would have left Isamu alone. But Hana had an impulse to follow Isamu. When she did so, Isamu noticed her and said: “Hana, normally I would let you come, but Netamu says he’ll get angry if you do. And trust me, you won’t like him when he’s angry.” At this, Hana realized that the only way to follow Isamu was to do so inconspicuously. Cloaked by a bush, she rushed after Isamu. Whenever Isamu turned around, she stopped dead in her tracks.

Hana followed Isamu to Nagai Kanashisa, still hidden in her bush so as not to be seen. She was shocked to see Isamu tied in ropes, at the mercy of his brother Netamu. No one she knew could vanquish Isamu. Netamu was a scarred, bruised man, not nearly as handsome as Isamu. Hana decided she did not like this person. She was right to think that. Netamu said, “This morning I told this was a picnic. Well, this is no picnic. This is the scene of slaughter. “For years I’ve been living in your shadow. Dear Mother and Father always liked you best. Even King Zenno-sama wished to have you as a son. You even get the girls! But I bet not even Hana knows I exist! I have to live in the sewers as a vagabond, day by day, picking up rotten leftovers from third-class restaurants-” “Eewww!” said Isamu. “That’s so disgusting! It’s not even true!” “AS I WAS SAYING... No one ever acknowledged my existence! I was wasted like an unwanted doll. Thrown away. Forgotten. And during those long days of neglect, I came up with an idea. “Why not kill the person who took my glory, say a bear ate you, and take the girl of my dreams from your cold, dead hands? “YES.... that would work very well. I would say I fought valiantly, but the bear was too strong. I would be a hero for bringing the news. And I would be known by everyone in Kakusutokoro. I would be a somebody.” Then he raised a knife, pointed it directly at Isamu’s chest, and-

“NOOOOOOOOOOOO!” screamed Hana as she rushed out from her hiding place and charged towards Isamu with her arms open. But it was too late-the deed had already been done. Hana shook Isamu, and he said, “Hana... when you give birth...tell my daughter...I love her...” Then his eyes closed as if going into a deep, long sleep. Hana glared at him with fiery, burning eyes. And Netamu felt all cold inside.

She summoned a giant, black, mouthed rose that shot out of the earth, which bared its fangs and licked its lips. Netamu said, “Don’t think I didn’t expect this. I have a weapon of my own.” Then he summoned an enormous boulder with one hundred arms. Netamu said, “Netamishi will crush you and your rose thingy. I don’t even care if I kill you anymore, as long as people know I exist.” Hana didn’t even flinch. The rose growled. Netamishi rolled through the forest...right into the rose’s mouth. Hana spoke two words: “Hananoshi, dinner.” Hananoshi went shooting towards Netamu, who screamed, “HANA! REMEMBER, I ALWAYS LOVED YOU!” And those were his last words. Hana shot a quick glare at Netamu, and said, “Well, so did Isamu.”

Hananoshi went back into the earth, taking Netamu with him to his den. Hana couldn’t stop crying after that. She considered giving up the will to live, but then she remembered Isamu’s last words. The next month, Hana gave birth to her daughter. Perhaps it was her bloodthirst after finishing Netamu, or the vengeance she longed for ever since that day, there were obviously a lot of hateful feelings inside her as she said, “I shall name her Hananoshi.”
