From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This shows the main gate way to the London County Asylum at Hanwell at the end of the Victorian period c.1890. Appears to have been taken late afternoon, from a position upon the GWR embankment, some 600 ft to the east of the Iron Bridge on the Uxbridge Road (junction of A 4020 and A 4127) The view is looking in the south to south easterly direction. Approx. grid ref TQ145802 The image has been cropped and enhanced.

It was from a post card's (Chester Vaughan series) with a postmark stamped 9 pm May 16th 1904. These post cards were very popular in England around this time. If posted locally in the morning they would arrive the same day. From the hackneyed phrases and banal messages written on the other side they seem to have been the e-mail of their day.

Source: I scanned it from post card, then cropped and enhanced image.
