Hanshew Middle School

Hanshew Middle School is a middle school located in Anchorage, Alaska. It services the midtown and South Anchorage areas. The current school building was constructed in 1985. The school is named after teacher, businessman, and former school board member Ual Strange Hanshew.

Hanshew an ethnically diverse school. 55% of the students are minorities, leaving there no ethnic majority. White students, constitute the largest group at 45%, the school is 15% Asian or Pacific Islander, 16% Native American or Alaska Native, 8% Hispanic, 8% Black, and 7% multi-ethnic. [2]

Students at Hanshew are assigned to year-long core classes at the beginning of the year. These classes include standard 7th and 8th grade math, science, language arts, and social studies. Students also sign up for elective classes on a semester basis, but generally receive quarter credit. However, classes in band, orchestra, or a foreign language are year-long classes.

The school is divided into teams, based on knowledge. With there being three 7th grade teams, three 8th grade teams, and two 7-8th grade teams. The team names currently are all named after gemstones or colors.
