Hans van de Ven

Johannes 'Hans' van de Ven (Born 1958, Velsen) is Professor of Modern Chinese History at the University of Cambridge, where he is also a Fellow of St Catharine's College. He studied at Leiden University, and went on to receive a PhD from Harvard. He has three sons, and as such is the History Link-Up Governor at Melbourn Village College in Cambridgeshire, UK.
Professor van de Ven is Chairman of the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies [1]. He was a visiting scholar at the Hopkins-Nanjing, China from 2005-2006 and is currently working on a project about the Chinese Maritime Customs Service. For his research, he has travelled to Grand Canal cities such as Bungbu and Yangzhou, as well as treaty ports such as Xiamen.
In Early 2008, van de Ven adopted a position with ACE Study Tours whereby he will serve as the Guest Lecturer for the firm's Chinese Civilization tours.
van de Ven is the son-in-law of the late Malcolm Kerr, political scientist and President of the American University of Beirut, and van de Ven's wife, Susan, authored a book on the subject[2]
