Hans-Joachim Birkner was a German Luftwaffe fighter ace and recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross during World War II. Birkner flew 284 missions, scoring 117 aerial victories.[1] Birkner often flew as the wingman of Erich Hartmann. On 14 December 1944 Birkner was killed when his Bf 109 suffered engine failure during take-off.[2]
