[edit] Song info
Written by the band's singer and guitarist, Jason Wade, the song was released as the first single on the DreamWorks Records label from the band, prior to the band's first album No Name Face being released in 2000.
Jason Wade, the lead singer of the group, claims he wrote the song in about 5-10 minutes. Wade said, "I remember just sitting on the couch in the studio and I heard the melody in my head while I was doing another vocal track, which is really weird, it'll kinda give you a headache. I don't recommend it, but anyway, I went into the other room and picked up a guitar and it just kind of happened, so from that moment on I learned when you have to write a song, when the melody is in your head."
"Hanging By a Moment" was only the third single in chart history, following Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs' "Wooly Bully" in 1965, and Faith Hill's "Breathe" in 2000, to become the number one Billboard Hot 100 Song Of The Year year without having topped the weekly Hot 100 chart at all during the year.
The song was adopted as the unofficial theme for the 2000/2001 NHL season.[citation needed] and became a popular signature song for proms and weddings. [1]
