Catchings was the 16th head coach for the Prairie View A&M University Panthers located in Prairie View, Texas and he held that position for four seasons, from 1986 until 1989. His coaching record at Prairie View was 8 wins, 25 losses, and 1 ties. As of the conclusion of the 2007 season, this ranks him eighth at Prairie View in total wins and 14th at Prairie View in winning percentage (0.250).[1][2]
Coach Catchings last two losses of the 1989 season are a part in the worst losing streak in NCAA history of 88 games between 1989 and 1998.[3]

Catchings later became the head coach at Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Alabama. He was the 14th head coach for the Golden Tigersand he held that position for two seasons, from 1994 until 1995. His coaching record at Tuskegee was 8 wins, 14 losses, and 0 ties. As of the conclusion of the 2007 season, this ranks him 11th at Tuskegee in total wins and 13th at Tuskegee in winning percentage (0.364).[4]
