Handforth railway station serves the village of Handforth in the English County of Cheshire.

[edit] Services

The station opened on 10 May 1842 and was previously situated approximately 75m north of its current location. Since its inception it has served a stop of the commuter route to/from Manchester, Stockport and Crewe/Wilmslow.

Since electrification of the line in 1960 it has been mainly served by electic multiple units (EMU).

During Monday to Saturday daytime Handforth is served by two EMU services per hour in each direction, one of which runs between Alderley Edge and Manchester and the other running between Crewe and Manchester. This becomes an hourly service in the evening from Crewe to Manchester, and at present on Sundays the service is an hourly DMU between Alderley Edge and Southport. Services are operated by Northern Rail.

[edit] Friends of Handforth Station

The Friends of Handforth Station, formed in 1996, are an active station adoption group who have carried out a number of projects at the station, including a station garden, sculptures, poetry and signs from railway operators in other countries.

The group works towards securing easier platform access for disabled passengers and those with prams, bikes etc. Their website is www.handforthstation.org.uk .
