Hanchongryun, also known as the South Korean Federation of University Students Councils, is a leftist student organization in South Korea. It campaigns against perceived foreign (particularly American) aggression and misbehavior towards Korea, as well as what it considers to be the resurgence of Japanese imperialism. In particular, it condemns the continued presence of the United States Forces Korea (USFK), which it sees as a humiliating vestige of US Imperialism and advocates on behalf of Korean reunification. The South Korean public is divided in its' opinion toward the organization. Many people consider it to be a subversive group which poses a threat to the security of the state, while others, particularly some younger people, are much more sympathetic. It was criminalized under the National Security Act in 1999 for alleged pro-North Korean activities. The North Korea-based Pomchonghakryon considers the Hanchongryun as its southern headquarters.
Its main headquarters are Korea University (Seoul) and Chonnam University (Gwangju). It was organized in 1993 as a realignment of Jeondaehyop (전대협) student organization.
