Uploading images to wikipedia

Help, im having troble uploading images to wikipedia. Hamedog 06:11, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

What kind of problems? Do realise wikipedia does not allow certain file formats such as .bmp because of the sake of hardrive space and bandwidth. Also if you simply rename a .jpg as .gif and attempt to upload to wikipedia, the servers will interprete the immage as being "corrupt". If that's the case try resaving image on for example windows paint as a .png or .gif which should "fix" it. --Cool CatTalk|@ 14:13, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
Thanks. Its working again but before I was trying to upload on firefox it was saying "Alear, no document' after hitting submit. On internet explorer it was saying page cannot be displayed. It was kinda of odd. Hamedog 14:25, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
That happens to all of us from time to time. When wikipedia servers are overloaded enough they rarely ignore some requests all together. It is a known bug I guess. We need better servers to compensate. :) --Cool CatTalk|@ 14:36, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
Okay, cool man.Hamedog 14:40, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

Categories

Hi Hamedog,

There is a Wikipedia guideline that says we only put articles in their most specific categories; that is, an article should not be in both a category and one of its sub-categories. In the case of Category:Public Schools Association, this was in Category:Private schools in Western Australia, Category:Schools in Western Australia, Category:Education in Western Australia and Category:Education, even though the first is a subcategory of the second, which is a subcategory of the third, which is a subcategory of the fourth. You also had Category:Public Schools Association listed as a subcategory of itself, which I'm sure I don't need to convince you is inappropriate.

Once you have created Category:Public Schools Association, article Public Schools Association doesn't need to be in any other category, because any other category that the article should be in the category should be in too.

As for templates, putting a template in a category will put every article to which the template is added into that category too. So one must be very careful. For example, you put Template:Public Schools Association in Category:Associations of schools, which would seem to make sense, except that as soon as you put the template into Hale School, Hale School then ends up in Category:Associations of Schools, which is obviously incorrect.

Sorry to dump so much information on you; you looked like you needed a bit of help. Snottygobble | Talk 00:45, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

What do you suggest I do then? Hamedog 00:47, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
With regards to what? I have already rationalised the categories in this case, so you don't need to do anything. I just wanted to let you know how it works for in future. If you want more information, you can see Wikipedia:Categorization. Snottygobble | Talk 00:52, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

Scotch College, Perth

This article is improving, and well done on what you have achieved thus far. Before it becomes featured at the Schools Portal - and it's very close - I'd look to see a couple more sections just fleshed out a bit more. On a related note, any chance of a picture or two of the school? Currently, there's the school logo, and then the school logo in a blurry blazer pic. Keep up the good work though! Harro5 03:18, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

In my view, to expand: History, Academics, Senior school academics, Moray, The Arts, and any more alumni you can think of that have Wikipedia articles. Have a look at either Caulfield Grammar School or Hopkins School, in my view the two best school article, and see how no section is really too small. That's what the aim is. Harro5 03:26, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
The article is now a showcase article at the Schools Portal. Of course, this doesn't mean it shouldn't keep improving. If you can't add any more to it at present, I'd encourage you to have the article peer reviewed. This has always helped on most articles looking to become first-rate. Harro5 05:13, 18 December 2005 (UTC)

Links overkill! Don't link to single words (eg. debating, 2003, soccer) as this is irrelevant. Almost all the internal links you've added this afternoon should go. Harro5 06:17, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

You must have mis-interpreted this advice on WP:PR. Links overkill is never acceptable, and would instantly sink a future FA if you presented the present version. Harro5 07:18, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
Look at this diff of today's changes. Why link film, comedy, or academic semester? This doesn't relate to the article, and when I say delete all the links added today, I really believe that means every one. None matter, and just take up KBs for better stuff in future. Harro5 08:08, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

I can't see Images

Coolcat, I have been away from my Computer for nearly a month because I was on my summer vacation and now I can only view images when I click on the high res. link on the images. When viewing pages there is just a blank box. Did some wikipedian policy change or something? Thanks Hamedog 04:38, 24 January 2006 (UTC). Could you please reply on my talk too?

No such thing has happened (as far as I know). We did have problems with image servers from time to time tho. which images can you not see? --Cool CatTalk|@ 11:55, 24 January 2006 (UTC)
I cannot see any images on articles. I cannot see the images when I click on the blank box where the image should be. I can only see then when I click high res. It been happening the whole time and I can see images on other websites. --HamedogTalk 10:09 June 12, 2008 (UTC)

Hong Kong pics

Hey, just about Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Busy Street, are you from/staying in Hong Kong, or just there on holidays? If so, I would like to invite you to participate in the WP:HKWNB. Btw, was that really taken in Mong Kok (because it was just my guess), or did you just follow my guess? :) Cheers. enochlau (talk) 08:29, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi. Yes It was really in Mong Kok, but I don't live in HK, I was on holiday there for 3 days. --HamedogTalk|@ 08:33, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
Ah ok, cool, I was holidaying there at about the same time too! enochlau (talk) 09:37, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
The main problem with that image is that the highlights are overexposed (styrofoam boxes and white wall). I would have trouble supporting this image for its technical problems, sorry. enochlau (talk) 15:26, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

Scotch College, Perth

What I meant by non-encyclopedic was that the article sometimes focuses in detail on some rather NN topics (the computer network getting 2 paragraphs, two paragraphs on students who've done well on tests the last two years, etc. Staxringold 23:02, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

Replied on User talk page. --HamedogTalk|@ 23:09, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
Either remove or tweak to be more fitting in an internation encyclopedia. For example, it's interesting to know the school has done well in recent testing, but you don't really need the specifics (that's what you ref to back up the statement that Scotch has done well). As for the computer network, I'd say technology is worth discussing, but not in that detail (or, if in that detail, fully and split-off into another article with content other than the network to supplement). Other things worth reviewing IMO include:
  • The lead sentence I mentioned in the FAC. A bit longwinded and it does come off as a catalog. Note how in Hopkins School (I'm not trying to push my school article format onto your college, it's just the school article I'm most familiar with) the founder's motto is cut down to a quick quote to get the same effect without the advertising-tone.
  • (not tone) The Founding section of history could use a ref or two.
  • The Arts section focuses quite a bit on what sound like pretty small programs. If they are big, make some references to how they are big. If they are small, one school's writing prize probably shouldn't be mentioned (outside a statement like "Scotch's art department offers several prizes to guide its students to try creative writing." with a ref to the prizes.
  • Music section could use a ref, especially on that upcoming tour. If it's a recent thing there must be documentation somewhere.
  • The uniform section is a fun read, but definetly needs some of those short paragraphs combined, and needs to lose some of the minutia. Things like the "next theme" are definetly not stable, which is a an FA criteria. I don't know if any of the specific events need/deserve mention outside "The school holds several events during which students can wear clothing other than their uniforms to school", again with a reference.
  • Again, at least stubs for the famous alums or keep them off the list for now.
It's a very good article (and it's great to see someone this dedicated to improving an article). The pictures are especially nice, you should ask Harro5 to consider featuring one at the Schools portal. As a side note, could you give Hopkins School a good once over for whatever you see as non-FA material? Staxringold 23:23, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

Also, no warnning ever! Just a block. Total abuse of admin rights, and not following policy.
Replying to the helpme. Umm, saying stuff like "down with curps" isn't going to help. Email curps, explain and see if he will lift the block.--Commander Keane 13:59, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
I actually have, twice. No reply. Must be a rouge, triger happy admin. --HamedogTalk|@ 14:01, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
Attacking users isn't acceptable. Anyway, please don't use {{helpme}} for this block thing (it's for helping new users, not for listening to attacks on Wikipedia users). You have the {{unblock}} above, so someone else will look into your situation perhaps.--Commander Keane 14:06, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
  • Yes, I am aware of that policy, but I see the FACT the curps ignored WIKIPEDIAN POLICY on blocking, by blocking me straight away, no warning, infinite and the no PREVIOUS VANDALISM, EVER.. I am aware of what the helpme is form but no body is reply to my emails so this seems to be my only ply. All my other edits have been in good faith, look at my contribs. And about the attacks, I am pretty much only pointing out how he has totaly avioded policy, so and for some out busrts about curps, Im sorry, I was angry. --HamedogTalk|@ 14:11, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
I have contacted Curps on his talk page. I recommend you write a damn good piece on why you shouldn't be blocked, and place it below here for Curps to see. Be patient.--Commander Keane 14:18, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
I really doubt I need that reason. His blocking of me is inapporiate, agaisnt policy. He also failed to check my contribs - I mean look at Scotch College, Perth for example, I wrote that and its up for WP:FAC and he blocks me. I have made over 1,600 edits, my first example of vandalism and I get pinged, straight away, no templates, no message on my talk page, just a sign when I click edit this page explaining to me I have been blocked. Yes, I am annoyed, and yes, I know my edit was wrong. But others have done alot worse vandalism and I was just really looking for help with an article I just finished completing, and I knowing that was the most watched page on wiki, I choose to vandalise it for the good of the project, to attempt to find an interested user to help expand an article. If you choose to leave me block, you won't see this user any more, and I feel the project will have lost something. --HamedogTalk|@ 14:24, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
The {{helpme}} is not appropriate for this case. Do not use it again for this case. If you do I'll protect your talk page so you can't edit it - to prevent the disruption. --Commander Keane 14:39, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
I was actaully asking you a question. :By the way Keane, your admin, can't you just unblock me? When you reply, Im off to bed. --HamedogTalk|@ 14:29, 14 March 2006 (UTC) Sorry Keane, but this is pretty much the only way I can speak to any one because I cannot write on a talk page. --HamedogTalk|@ 14:41, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

This is a very odd case. You are certainly no newbie, having made a number of contributions since October. Yet you vandalized Wikipedia in a pretend newbie-like way, ignoring the very prominent HTML comment at the top of the page that warns against vandalizing this very page of all pages. [2]

As an experienced user, you know what talk pages are for, you know that article pages aren't talk pages, you know that vandalism gets reverted very quickly (rarely even as long as 60 seconds) for a page like Wikipedia so almost no one would even see the question you asked... and the question you asked was so vague that no one could provide any useful answer even if they wanted to. I can hardly believe that you made that edit for the ostensible reason you continue to claim. In neither your two e-mails nor all your messages above have you explained why in the world you vandalized Wikipedia. Part of the delay in unblocking you was trying to figure out what your motives were, and I'm still mystified. Aggressive demands to be unblocked immediately, with no apparent regrets, aren't very helpful.

It's the sort of thing that suggests possible hijacking, or perhaps some hidden history of prior vandalism, but having looked briefly through your contribution history I didn't find evidence of either. I've unblocked (note an indefinite block is not necessarily the same thing as an infinite block... I always review my own vandalism blocks within 24 hours).

Note that per Wikipedia:Blocking policy, warnings are not usually given for deliberate vandalism intended to discredit Wikipedia, and vandalism to the Wikipedia article itself (reading and deliberately ignoring that prominent impossible-to-miss HTML comment at the very top of the page) certainly qualifies on that count.

As I've already mentioned, I have unblocked now, although I think 24 hours would have been warranted. I hope you continue with positive contributions in the future. -- Curps 22:45, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Crowd for Brum-High

That's what I thought. Actually I'm such a sad nerd that I looked around for a pen to jot it down to add it to Wikipedia after the game, but all my hands found were a beer. btw I'm one very happy Highlanders fan tonight, I imagine you're pretty happy too after the Crusaders big win at Loftus (I tipped that one, not the Highlanders/Brumbies upset though!!) —Stormie 12:18, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

Yep just killing some time before I go downstairs for the game. I'll see how it goes, if the first half entertains me I'll keep going, if it's too one-sided I'll go to bed. Tough to decide who I want to win that one, I like the Force, but the Cheetahs have my two favourite South African fatties, Os and Ollie. :-) —Stormie 12:30, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

Removing semi-final section

Sorry nothing personal, I just thought that it was easier to add it after the Highlanders-Brumbies result. Because the game was in progress and most of the information was only going to come into play after the game I thought it was better to add depending on who won. Sorry I should have probably put something in the talk page about why I removed it. Lummie 13:14, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

Gorillas in the Mist

I don't think creating a disambig page for Gorillas in the Mist is right. A much better approach would be to have a disambig statement on the top of Gorillas in the Mist: The Story of Dian Fossey with "Gorillas in the Mist redirects here, for the 2006 Super 14 Final dubbed "Gorillas in the Mist" see 2006 Super 14 Final".

North Korea/DPRK

I don't wish to get into a revert war with you over this article (North Korean missile test, 2006). I respect your opinion on the naming of the Korean countries, but I believe we should stick to the conventions after all the pages for these countries are called North Korea and South Korea, both of which explain their offical titles. 2003 RWC Magazine

Hey, I was actually going to upload that image myself, as its on the net, and was planning on using it on the 2003 Rugby World Cup final, which I'am working on here. It unfortunantly can't be used on Rugby World Cup as we are already using two images that are copyright, and a third would most likely see people start complaining about fair-use, and try and get it de-featured. Cheers. Cvene64 08:09, 16 July 2006 (UTC)

You can only use it under fair-use, as even though you scanned it, what you scanned is copyright, so it is what is known as a derivitive image. So what I'm saying is, you can't scan it, and upload as public-domain or under a commons license. It can definantly be used in the final article once I finish it, as it has no other copyright images. Pitch image

Nice work with the team line-ups image, it looks fantastic! Cvene64 14:47, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

User:A Man In Black

I don't really think what he is doing is actually vandalism, it seems to be just a little joke. Other users would only take it as a joke, cheers —M inun Spiderman 15:47, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

Tri Nations

Hmm, I'm doubtful to be honest. Unless there is a clear cut majority, it won't happen, right now its basically me and Yorkshire arguing about it. Its really annoying though that none of the opposers have responded to the fact that it serves league the same purpose, but allows union to have the right name (which gets me thinking they are saying no, so union doesnt "win"). Since it is an encyclopedia, not a rugby war, that should probably be brought up...Cheers Cvene64 15:44, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Award for you

To Hamedog, for your commitment to rugby union and all the work you have done! As well as getting Super 12 champions to FA class.!

Thanks for leaving me one as well mate, I just saw it then, as that page isnt on my watchlist or anything, thanks a a lot Hamedog. This is the first barnstar I have given out, you deserve one. Cheers. Cvene64 01:27, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Re:image

Hey Hamedog, the image looks really good, nice work! Also, I have been messing around with rugby balls and barnstars trying to create one, but I havent got anything decent yet, but its a good idea. Cheers. Cvene64 03:32, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Help me

Can you please edit {{YELru}} so when the cursor is over the yellow card, it just says "sin-binned"? Thanks--HamedogTalk|@ 03:50, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

DYK aug 1

Updated DYK query On 1 August 2006, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article 2006 Kapa O Pango controversy, which you created. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

--Syrthiss 13:51, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Yep, very nice. :) Syrthiss 13:57, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
Since it is just an internal link in Wikipedia, no. It only increases when other articles refer to the article...and other than putting a link on All Blacks to the controversy, I'm not sure where else would be appropriate. Syrthiss 14:12, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Portal:Rugby Union

Hi, Dingy give me your message. What do you call french standard? Is it about the portal itself, or articles? Sebcaen 05:49, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

Ok I'll see what I can do, if you wanat the same, or not, but I think you'd just have to change colors and text. Sebcaen | 09:18, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
Well you can see the work here: [[3]]. There is again some parts to translate, and some specifities to add. But soon it will be good. Sebcaen | 11:35, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

DYK

Always nice to see a rugby article on dyk, good work, you have quite a few to your name, I believe Super 12 champions was once there as well. Cheers. Cvene64 11:15, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

5? Thats a lot! Rugby union in Fiji was also up a while ago. It's always good to have rugby articles featured/promoted in any way, for example, the Heineken Cup final was in the news section which was pretty cool. Jonah Lomu and Jonny Wilkinson are also up at Good Article nominations at the moment, waiting for a non-rugby editor to pass or not pass them. Yeah... :) Cvene64 11:44, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
Yeah I saw it up there ages ago, thanks for doing that. I had an idea to "save" it for the first day of the 2007 Rugby World Cup, but that may be too far away. In any case, we should definantly have another featured article so someone can use it on the day of the World Cup, I guess All Blacks would be the most interesting...? Cvene64 11:56, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, thats a good idea. Also, we need to get the Portal up to featured status too, for the world cup - they linked to the soccer portal during theres. William Webb Ellis Trophy is another article that could be at FA status by then, and that would be good to go up.--HamedogTalk|@ 11:59, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, hopefully more info on the WWE Trophy becomes available in the lead up to the WC. I'm keen to get the Portal up to speed as well. Cheers Cvene64 12:06, 2 August 2006 (UTC)
Haha thats very funny. Cvene64 12:28, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

Haka of the All Blacks; Ka Mate; 2006 Kapa O Pango controversy

Thanks for your comment on my Talk. I have made a proposal at Talk:Haka_of_the_All_Blacks#Rationalisation_of_this_article_.26_the_separate_articles_for_the_haka. Nurg 02:23, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

An objection has been raised to my proposal so I'll let that sit for now. Didn't the Kapa o Pango controversy start in 2005? Do you have any objection to me renaming 2006 Kapa O Pango controversy to Kapa o Pango controversy? Nurg 04:37, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Hey mate

Live in Brisbane, though my family has lived in England. By the way, Jonah is now a GA article. Also, I think we should start nominating new collabs now, yeh? Cvene64 13:47, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Also, I have been trying to bring the S14 teams up to a higher quality. I started with the Stormers, because I noticed that Cape Town was going to a main page FA, and the Stormers was in a pretty bad condition. I also did the Cats, and to a lesser extent, the Reds and Brumbies (still needs work). Some of the S14 teams still have pretty bad pages, made up of just a lead and their table positions, so we should def. work on them all. Also, I think its time we introduce Template:Rugby Team infobox to all rugby teams, instead of having heaps of dif. templates for English/Irish/S14 teams. Having jerseys looks better in my opinoin as well. Cheers.
Yeah its late-ish now, and yeah, you support the Force yeah? And Crusaders I gather. A final IRB collab. sounds good. Cvene64 14:05, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
Oh ok. Umm, got to the Springboks game. Almost imposible to get tickets to ABs though, so missed out on that. Did you go the Irish match pre-Tri Nations? Cvene64 14:15, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
Ah ok. Sounds good. Look forward to those photos. Cheers. Cvene64 14:32, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Rugby Union Quiz

It's been about 16 days since you posted the question. I really don't know the answer and couldn't find it. You might want to consider dropping another hint or posting the answer and a new question to keep the quiz from dieing. Just a thought, by the way I like your articles on Rugby. help me

Hi, I can't get template {{Super 14 team}} to work on Central Cheetahs, specifically the kit bit, I know what I am doing with the kit, but I don't know, the syntax to get it to comply with the Super 14 template. Look at the page now, patern la is in the middle of it.--HamedogTalk|@ 12:35, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Let me check. Will report here in a few minutes. Hang on - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 12:41, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

Even I can't understand how the template works. Try checking out Queensland Reds or England national rugby union team for examples of a working template. Help on colours is found on Wikipedia:Colours. If you still can't solve the problem then ping for help again or contact User:Cvene64. He was the one who added the template to Queensland Reds here - Aksi_great (talk - review me) 13:28, 17 August 2006 (UTC)

3N

I meant that not all results have the same amount of detail, like some don't have lineups and pitch image. I tried making some, but I don't have enough time at the moment. Also, we should reference it properly, and there is probably other stuff that needs to be written about; eg; controversey over extension yet no Pumas, and it being over without the boks playing a home game..and the wikibreak thing is just there, Im not on one atm. Enjoy the All Black victory. Cheers. Cvene64 09:42, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

Great work. It looks very nice now, great to get it on the main page as well. Fantastic. Cvene64 07:13, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
Do you think we should have a little section about the Tuqiri/McCaw thing, and what the PM said about it? Cvene64 07:15, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
