[edit] Oath of the Horatii

Thanks for finding the source. I suspected the claims were a hoax, but every now and then some odd claim made by an anonymous editor turns out to be correct, like in this case. I am glad to hear that you will clean up this article. Thanks. Rl 19:47, 25 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Art portal features

I'm so glad to see your input, Ham! Presently, there is no process to changing Art portal features. Please change the portal page whenever you want to. It could use some attention from someone besides myself. If lots of people were involved with the portal, a process would probably evolve. The project Wikipedia:WikiProject Visual arts is related to the portal, but the project is moving slowly. --sparkit (talk) 14:11, Jun 2, 2005 (UTC)

Ham, the features you've added are marvelous! Thanks. --sparkit (talk) 19:27, Jun 2, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Re: British Museum

I have no particular side in the argument, nor do I wish to impose a POV on that section, I merely found it wordy:

"the expertise and desire to preserve the items are now more widespread"

"The debate over the legitimacy of the British Museum's claims over many of its artifacts continues, with the Museum claiming an inalienable right to hold them under British law, and critics accusing it of theft and inconsiderateness"

Any sentence that has to use "inconsiderateness" can be cleaned up. Is there any way it can be cleaned up and retain the NPOV? It just is awkward and wordy.

--Robojames 20:29, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I made an effort to maintain your content, but more clearer:
  • "Some critics have accepted this, although many argue that the artifacts would be well protected in their home countries, as there is sufficient expertise and desire to preserve them."
  • "While the British Museum continues to claim it has an inalienable right to the disputed artifacts under British law; critics continue to accuse the British Museum of theft and cultural appropriation."
Let me know if it's ok. --Robojames 20:49, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Uploading from Commons

May I ask why you uploaded that image from the Commons? If it is on there already, it doesn't need to be uploaded to the local wiki to work. Cheers, smoddy 20:32, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

  • Which one? – Ham 20:35, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Leonardo's 'surname'

Sparkit, why have you changed all references to Leonardo to 'da Vinci' in the newly-renamed Annunciation (da Vinci)? Considering that the last part of his name just means 'from Vinci' (rather than being a surname in the modern sense), it seems to me to be as awkward as an article on Henry VIII which repeatedly calls his first wife 'of Aragon'. Only a minor quibble; please carry on with the good work you're doing for art-based articles. — Ham 09:54, 17 August 2005 (UTC)

"Leonardo" sounds odd to me, however consistency in terminolgy throughout articles is more important to me and I see that wikipedia style for him seems to be using "Leonardo". So, I've changed that article back to "Leonardo". >>sparkit|TALK<< 16:34, August 17, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Re:Leornardo paintings

I created Category:Leonardo da Vinci paintings mainly because Category:Paintings was getting too large and needed to be broken up. For this purpose a separate paintings category is needed. Thus I think a better solution is to leave his drawings, architectural works, sculptures, and cartoons in Category:Leonardo da Vinci. I didn't read The Virgin and Child with St. Anne and St. John the Baptist, and forgot that it wasn't a painting. I have thus moved it out of paintings and back to Category:Leonardo da Vinci. Good work on that article, by the way, we have a real shortage of people with expertise in fine art. - SimonP 18:19, 19 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] On Image:Giorgione Tempest.jpg

I read the comment that you made on the image, I personally thought the Commons version Image:Giorgione 019.jpg was better, because it is of a higher resolution and also because it picks out the details in the picture better. For example, look at the boy on the left. But it seems that my interpretation of the "duplicate" CSD criteria was incorrect, so I'll probably list the ones which aren't speedily deleted in a block on ifd. - Hahnchen 20:55, 13 December 2005 (UTC)

It was speedied, but if you think it should still be in wikipedia, I have a local copy. I can re-upload it if you want. - Hahnchen 15:14, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] P:L pictures

Hi Ham,

Just thought I'd say thanks for your contributions to the Portal's showcase picture section - I like the gallery format you have introduced at Portal:London/Pictures/Wikipedia featured pictures. However, for some reason, the National Gallery image is not being shown... I don't really understand why - the HTML seems ok... perhaps you know better?

Cheers, Deano (Talk) 15:06, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

Don't know, sorry - it works fine for me. Ham 15:11, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] cquote

I noticed you changed the comments about Freeze by Saatchi on the Saatchi Gallery article from a blockquote to a "c quote". It looks pretty, but I'm not familiar with it, and wonder which circumstances it should be used in. Thanks.

Tyrenius 05:01, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

As far as I can see, it's just that, a prettier alternative to blockquote. Here's a list of pages that use it – a relatively catholic mix of historical biographies, computer game articles etc. I imagine the only inappropriate use would be in an article on a particularly sombre or serious subject, where it would probably be judged to be too cartoony. I like the template, but feel free to revert if you feel it lowers the tone of the article.
The list of exhibitions in three columns was likewise just an aesthetic tweak, and I think it will look better when the list is more complete. Regards, Ham 13:02, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi Ham, thanks for the info. It seems to me as it is so prominent it should be used for an outstanding quote as in Tony Banks, Baron Stratford (or in a "fun" article). I'm not altering it in Saatchi Gallery for now anyway, as I'm not working on that article at the moment - I spent a bit of time dealing with POV edits. The columns are certainly much better, and I would have used them if I had known how at the time. Best Tyrenius 16:39, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Holbein-ambassadors.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Holbein-ambassadors.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. Shyam (T/C) 15:55, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

  • I uploaded this pic when I was starting off in Wikipedia; it's actually a duplicate of the identically-named Image:Holbein-ambassadors.jpg on Wikicommons, uploaded by a different user with the PD-art template. At the time I thought that images have to be uploaded to Commons and Wikipedia separately, but of course they don't, so you may delete this waste of server space. [edit] Re. Metropolitan Museum of Art

Ham -- Thanks for your kind note re. my expansion of the Met's article. I'll take a look at my source material and start gathering some footnotes. If you have any suggestions to improve the article's overall format, I'd appreciate your input; currently, with the addition of all the department details, it seems a bit sprawling and unwieldy (a bit like trying to see every department at the Met in one afternoon). [edit] Portal:Visual arts/Categories

Ham, I see you made the original version of this so I have a question for you. Why are Performing arts and Æsthetics(which is categorized only under philosophy) part of the visual arts categories? I already made an edit where I removed Literature. Can Performing arts and Æsthetics be removed as well? It looks like Portal:Arts/Categories already has this. Removing these would be more consistent with Arts. Thanks - Clubmarx | Talk 00:48, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

  • Sorry about that; the page is just a copy of the original version of Portal:Arts/Categories (back when it was still the Art Portal). I should have looked more closely at it before dumping the text wholesale. You're right, the performing arts and aesthetics do not belong. HAM Image:Icons-flag-wales.png 07:56, 15 May 2006 (UTC)
  • No problem. I thought I was missing something. :) I've removed them. Clubmarx | Talk 15:37, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Arts

A lot of people (including me) has listed their names onto the proposed projects page under arts. The project shall proceed. Notify me on my talk page if you're starting to create the page of your proposed wikiproject. Anonymous_anonymous_Have a Nice Day 15:01, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

I'm terribly sorry, but the project has been up and running for weeks at Wikipedia:WikiProject Arts! I was sure I'd put up a project now underway message on the proposal page, but either the edit didn't process or somebody's taken it off. Again, sorry to have left you out! Anyone else on the list who still hasn't posted on the talk page for WP:WPArts is about to get notification of the project's existence on theirs. HAM 17:21, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Just a reminder...

You had nominated Category:Art magazines for renaming, but when I went to remove the renaming tag after a keep decision there wasn't a {{cfr}} template on the category page. I figure it was just an oversight, but just thought I'd ping you on it. Without a tag, people don't nessecarily know that the category is up for renaming / deletion unless they watch CFD a lot. :) Cheers! Syrthiss 12:58, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Featured picture

I was thinking of updating the featured picture on the Visual arts portal. I see you were the last to update it. Is there a process for nominating pics? I'd like to use the Aalto Vase image. It doesn't look like there's a formal process, just thought I'd check first. Clubmarx 19:44, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

  • Feel free to update the picture. There's no formal nominating process yet, but there's no reason not to be bold and create one (I'm busy creating one for Portal:Arts at the moment, and have found that Portal:London has a good example of how to do it). Fair play to you, Clubmarx, you've been giving this portal a lot of attention lately, so I've added your name to the list of maintainers for P:VA on Wikipedia:Portal/Directory. [edit] Hi Ham its Amandajam

About the Cumean Sybil.

I presume your a bloke. If you saw another bloke who was feeling really randy, would you know the signs?

I'm a woman of the same age as the Cumean Sibyl, and believe me, I KNOW what her problem is! I'm also an artist. I look at people with a very perceptive eye.

Mandyjm

[edit] Ham, its Jam

What the heck has the Sibyl's wizened appearance got to do with the paragraph?

That paragraph is not about wizened, pretty, curly-headed, broad-chested, chubby.... it's about feeling, thinking, listening, doing....

Mandyjm

[edit] Response to this and the post above it

It's a fair cop: I'm a bloke, and nowhere near Cumaea's age. Regarding your second post, well, I don't think I'll be the last person to look at that paragraph and wonder what the sibyl having a problem with bowel movements has to do with anything. Thanks for toning it down to "may be incontinent" in your revert, though; it is appreciated. HAM 17:39, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bowels

No, it's the waterworks that are the typical problem of a woman of that age. Particularly one that's had kids. Judging by the boobs, she's had kids. The give away is that one of her feet is on the ground and the other is raised so that her upper thighs are together as well as her knees.

One of the external links goes to a review of an article (I think) about Michelangelo's inetrest in anatomy. The more I look at his works, the more I appreciate his understanding of the outward human signs of what the person was experiencing, either physically or emotionally. And their physical experience included their human frailty. Look closely at the prophets and sibyls and you may find figures suffereing from what common ailments. Who has a cold, who is sitting awkwardly because he has piles, who has toothache, who is arthritic, who has a migraine? Just a possibility, I haven't actually done it!

OK, but David, Jonah, Ezekiel, Bacchus and Moses all have one foot on the ground and the other raised as well, and none of them bore children! I was under the impression that it was a trick borrowed from contrapposto, and Michelangelo usually uses it to the effect of throwing the figures off balance. HAM 11:19, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Speculation

I agree. I've inserted a fact instead.
