[edit] Michelangelo

Hi Ham

I think that the entire section on Michelangelo the artist- Appraisal, could be lifted out.

The problem is that it covers all three major works David, ceiling, Last Judgement, looking at philosophy/theology and style. I don't think it ought to be broken up. Iy would require a lot moore writing to put each one in the context of each other. Yet I'm hesitant to start a new page with it. Might be the best thing to do though.

I agree that the method stuff is better under Sistine Chapel.

Actually when I started writing, I thought that the works hadn't been suffuciently dealt with- didn't realise they'd been given separate pagees! Lack of experience... I'lll get there!

OK! What's your suggestion....new page or try to chop iit up and stuff it in?

Wish this blinking keybooard didnt double letters up. If I'm careful it leaves them ouut. If I thump it, it gives multiples. Yoou should see what it does if I'm reallly pissssed offff!

[edit] Template:Painting

Hello Ham. I have a question about Template:Painting and when I looked at its history I noticed that you have worked on it, so perhaps you can help me. Do you know if there is a way to include more than one name, or perhaps some text (e.g. "circle of Raphael", "attributed to Raphael") in the field "painter="? I'm thinking specifically about The Vision of the Cross, which is usually attributed to a whole group of painters. Thanks, Skarioffszky 14:37, 11 October 2006 (UTC) P.S.: I've found a solution [1], though I still hope there is a simpler way to do it. Skarioffszky 15:07, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

Never mind all that. I simply created a new template Template:Painting2 for cases like this. Skarioffszky 17:24, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Dubh Artach

Dear Ham, I am attempting to find out more about the painting on the bookcover here: http://www.silveradomuseum.org/images/rls2.jpg. Essentially my interest is in finding out as to whether the image could be used on the Dubh Artach page. It was brought to my attention via Talk:Dubh Artach, the relevant parts of which I reproduce below:

"In addtion to the photo it would be great if someone knows the source of the painting used as this bookcover. [2] If its over 100 years old then Template:PD-art may apply. Edit by GameKeeper "

Any advice or assistance gratefully received. Ben MacDui 13:24, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] I am sending this out to wikiart folks everywhere,

so please don't feel picked on. Here's my thing. I've been watching list of sculptors recently and have been weeding out the entries in red on the theory that this is an index of sculptors in wikipedia. However i have been reluctant to remove artists that I know or discover to be real, wikipedia worthy people, so am trying to decide if i should just do a stub - maybe a lot of stubs - of these folks or leave them on the list [I HATE lists with too much red - check out the List of Frank Lloyd Wright works for example.

For example, i checked out one, François-Joseph Duret (1804 - 1865) and discovered that there are at least two sculptors with that name, (1732 - 1816) and (1804 - 1865)- this one is the son - and both probably could comfortably be in wikipedia. I did have a rather bad moment recently when someone DELETED my article on Connor Barrett about an hour [maybe less] after I first posted it, on the theory that he was not wikiworthy [or something] and a lot of these fairly remote (in time and place from me) artists are a lot more obscure than Barrett. So, i would like to know that i have the support of the wikipedia art history community before doing this. Drop me a line, if you wish to sit down and be counted. Life is good, Carptrash 05:03, 4 November 2006 (UTC) P.S. although i do mostly American art i have contributed to lots on non-American articles including Aleijadinho, Ásmundur Sveinsson, Einar Jonsson, Gunnfrídur Jónsdóttir, Henry Moore, Ivan Meštrović, Ørnulf Bast, Rayner Hoff, and probably some others. I say this because most of the stubs I'm proposing would be Europeans. Oh yes, check out the article on David (Bernini) - which sorely needs a decent picture. Got one? Einar

[edit] Your sonnet

Forgive me for not having acknowledged it sooner, but I wanted to thank you for the lovely sonnet on my userpage. You obviously have quite some talent and I hope that I can repay you with a sonnet as good as yours. I have returned recently from an extended wiki-break. I'm not sure if there is still much discussion on arts categories and such, but I'd love to rejoin it if there is. Take care! Cheers! *Exeunt* Ganymead | Dialogue? 17:05, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

Good to see you back, Ganymead! The sonnet, as I think I noted in the closing lines, was just a bit of fun doggerel, but I'm glad you liked it! My Wikipedia activity has been reduced somewhat now that I'm at university; a bit of wiki-gnomery here and there. The Arts Project and the Portal are rather dead as a result (although the former seems to have a steady trickle of new members); it would be nice if they could be revived some time. Hope to see you around on the 'pedia doing more good work on theatre articles! [talk to the] HAM 12:28, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] El Greco

Thanks for your comments in the peer-review of El Greco. You'll see I've reorganized the material per your suggestions. I want your opinion for the changes. I just did not yet changed the title of "Works". This section deals mainly with the attribution problems, but my initial goal was to create a section speaking about the total number of his paintings, drawings and sculptures as attributed by modern scholars. Starting the research for the section, I saw this interesting diachronical debate about the attributions and I analysed it.

I thought if it would be useful to keep the title of the section "Works" and create two subsections: "Attribution debate" (the current section) as you suggested and a new sub-section "Largest Collections". But I don't know if this last sub-section is really necessary. I first though to name this article "Notable Works" (like in Salvador Dali), but I think it wouldn't be useful to create a list of works already mentioned most of them in previous sections. I also thought about speaking in this section about some of the El Greco's works auctioned off during the last two decaded (most of which bought by Greek museums, municipalities etc.) But again I'm not sure if this is necessary. And then I though about this "largest Collection", treating El Greco's works whereabouts in general once again inspired by the last two paragraphs of the "Notable Works" section in Dali. But again I did not yet implement it, wondering if a section saying that "most of his works are in Spain at X and Z museum", "Outside Spain the biggest collection is in Washington", "The Greek Gallery bought the B and the C painting and now has the A+B+C" etc. is really useful.

So, my real concern, if I haven't make myself yet clear, is to make the "Works" section to be really a "Works" section treating the whole spectrum. I hope I did not confuse you much! But I'd really like to have some feedback and your opinion. Cheers!--Yannismarou 11:45, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

Much improved; I can see that you have great plans for this article! The division into 'Life', 'Art' and 'Legacy' makes for a clearer and less jumpy read. The idea of discussing where El Greco's works have ended up is a good one, but I would think the best place for that is in Posthumous artistic reputation. If the largest body of his work outside Spain is in the Washington NGA, founded as late as 1937, that must say something about how he has fared in artistic and intellectual fashions. It probably doesn't merit a section on its own – more like a paragraph. Works as a section title sounds to me as if it should be a sub-section of Art, so I am still in favour of a change (IMO, it shouldn't be slotted into the Art section, which is broadly about style, as Works is really about historiography). A section titled Questions of attribution or some such would still be fitting if your ultimate aim is for that section to discuss "the total number of his paintings, drawings and sculptures as attributed by modern scholars". All the best, [talk to the] HAM 13:19, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] London Portal article of the month

I was a little surprised to see you delete Restoration spectacular along with its supports from the list of proposed articles of the month.[3] Any special reason? It was both more recently proposed, and had more support, than anything else on the list. Bishonen | talk 21:41, 5 December 2006 (UTC).

Have a look at the main Portal:London page or Talk:Restoration spectacular. As the most popular proposal, Restoration spectacular is the showcased article as of the first of this month. No further voting is therefore needed and it can be removed from the list. Don't forget that I made the proposal in the first place! Regards, [talk to the] HAM 21:54, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Claude painting

I'm pretty sure that they can't claim copyright over the straight reproduction even under British law - I went through this with an image of some painting ages ago, but can't for the life of me remember what it was. I think in order to copyright it they have to have altered it in some way or to have in some way added to it, not just taken a photo. I haven't got time to dig through and find out the specific details now - we could always rewrite it as a fair use case until we get clarification (which would be viable, as it is a central feature of that article, but would mean dropping it from the DYK page), or do a quick search for another version that doesn't try and exert copyright. Cheers, Yomanganitalk 21:31, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Tate Modern

You didn't update the reference access date for the 2006 visitor figures, but do you think it would be useful to readd the 2005 figure to build historical data? Artybrad 02:52, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

Good thinking. I've put the link in <ref></ref> tags and added the access date. Last year the visitor numbers went up from 3,900,000 to 4,900,000 (very neat, that) so I added the phrase "the number of visitors was up by 1 million from 2005" as an indicator of the previous year's figures. I also rounded the number up to the nearest 100,000, as is done on National Gallery, London, British Museum et al; I reckon it's easier to digest that way. [edit] BM

Hi Ham – sorry for the delay in getting back, no worries about "fiddling with my page"...lol, basically I’ve become too attached to the BM page and any changes I start jumping, so have decided to let others contribute in better ways.

I really like the work you've done to the columns and the templates; it's made the page clearer and has improved the aesthetics / appeal. Your totally fine with the Persepolis image, it was out of place but wasn't too sure about placement, removing it altogether was a good move.

Regarding the Rosetta Stone, it definitely should be added as an image however Wikimedia Commons doesn't have a half decent image of it, so will have to dart to the Museum one evening and take a couple of snaps, in terms of placement I'm cool wherever it goes. That leads me onto the 'evocative images', in a nutshell visit the museum during a weekday evening or an hour before closing on the weekend, it’s an excellent time to take snaps. I'm really surprised how few people there are at those times, and with a little bit of patience the shots you can achieve are amazing. Furthermore, even though the National Gallery doesn't allow pics to be taken I’ve taken some equally evocative ones there, so am happy to hand them over to you if you like for free usage on wikimedia and elsewhere.

I think the UK has some of the greatest collection of museums in the world and definitely London has amongst the finest. I want to see most of Londons great museum enhanced to FA standard. To that end, I’ve stayed away from the National Gallery page because a) it’s excellent, and b) your doing a great job. Also, I my next project is likely to be with the Victoria & Albert Museum article; it is a total mess, and also enhancing the Dulwich Picture Gallery.

Finally, how do you nominate a page for Peer Review? though the BM page still needs work on it, I would like to know.

Thanks for all your help, really appreciate it.

Cheers Muj --ImperialCollegeGrad 20:29, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi. Sorry if this seems like a pointless question. I have noticed that you are one of the very few people who nominate and vote for showcase articles and images for the London Portal.
