Hampton, Peterborough
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hampton is a newly developing township in Peterborough, England. There are currently two neighbourhoods within Hampton - Hampton Hargate and Hampton Vale, still growing. A third area, Hampton Leys is now under construction and a fourth, Hampton Hempsted, has been approved.
The township has seen rapid expansion over recent years, including the opening of primary schools in both Hargate and Vale. Hampton College, a secondary school built to serve Hampton, opened to years 7 and 8 in September 2005, and expanded to year 9 in September 2006 and year 10 in 2007. Further expansion, including a sixth form, is underway and due for completion by 2010. The school currently boasts state-of-the-art IT equipment, an outdoor amptiheatre and is built around a courtyard setting. In the evenings, the school is used for a variety of groups and adult education classes and it is hoped that the school will eventually form the heart of the community within Hampton. The college was recently found to be 'outstanding' by Ofsted, and was rated as outstanding in 6 out of a possible 7 categories. This puts it in the top 2% of schools nationally.
Hampton is served by a large shopping centre - Serpentine Green - which opened in 1999 and includes a Tesco Extra hypermarket, a number of other retail outlets, restaurants and a health centre. Serpentine Green is targeted mainly at out-of-town shoppers, and a few local shops exist.
A local business park was completed in 2003/2004 and has seen rapid growth with a number of local businesses and national charities setting up there.
The police station is completed, and a number of play areas have been built.
There is a new website with an overview of the development www.ohhampton.co.uk
