Hampshire Scout County (The Scout Association)

Hampshire is a Scout County and part of the Scout Association of the United Kingdom. It is concurrent with the political county of Hampshire, and provides Scouting opportunities for young people and adults in the area.[1][2]

The 1st Lymington appears to the first Scout Troop in Hampshire in 1908. The 1st Eastleigh, 7th Bassett and 14th Highfield were formed in 1909. The Chief Scout, Robert Baden Powell toured Hampshire Scout troops in 1910. At that time there were 2,965 members in 104 troops in 22 Local Associations. The Grand Rally at Southampton Common on 2 October 1912, attended by Baden Powell, was recorded on film now available in the Hampshire Archives. A Gang Show was started in Winchester District in 1955.[3][4]

Hampshire is the largest Scout county and is currently split into 27 Scout districts.[3][5] Scout Network Units exist in some Districts and the Southampton University Scout and Guide Club, a member of the Student Scout and Guide Organisation (SSAGO) is in the County.[6]

[edit] Andover

Situated in the North West of Hampshire, Andover District includes the two urban areas of Andover town and Whitchurch and the large rural area surrounding them.

[edit] Basingstoke East

Basingstoke East District incorporates the east side of the town and the area to the east, including Basing.

Basingstoke West District incorporates the west side of the town and the area to the west, including Oakley.

[edit] Blackwater Valley

Blackwater Valley District is the largest District in the county and was formed by the combing of Farnborough & Cove District and Aldershot District.

Bramshill District in the north of the county includes Hook, Rotherwick, Hartley Wintney, Hawley, Yatley as well as the Bramshill area.

[edit] Chandlers Ford

Chandlers Ford District is a small geographical District with five Group Headquarters within an area of four square miles. It has its own camp site within the private estate at Cranbury Park, lying just off the M3 near junction 13.

The City of Portsmouth Scout Council covers the old Scout Districts of Portsdown, Central Portsmouth (previously Hilsea and Kingston) and Southsea

[edit] Eastleigh and District

Eastleigh District consists of the town and the conurbations to the east.

[edit] Fareham East

Fareham East consists of the part of the urban district from the Portsmouth City boundary with Portchester to the River Meon, excluding Stubbington and Hill Head.[7]

Fareham West District includes the west of the town and all the communities to the west as far as Park Gate.

Gosport District consists of Gosport town and Lee-on-Solent.

Havant District borders West Sussex and covers the area to the north of Portsmouth to the boundary of Petersfield District.

Itchen North District comprises the area from Bitterne to Hedge End.

Itchen South is an average sized District covering the rural parts Southern Parishes of Eastleigh and the urban parts of South Eastern part of Southampton City Council.

Meon Valley comprises the hamlets in the river valley.

New Forest East comprises the hamlets in and around Hythe.

New Forest North consists of Totton and the north of the New Forest.

New Forest South consists of the south of the New Forest.

New Forest West consists of the towns of Ringwood and Fordingbridge and the surrounding area.

Odiham Scout District is situated in the north of Hampshire, between the junctions 4a and 5 on the M3 poviding Scouting for Odiham, Fleet, Church, Crookham and Crondall. It has eight Groups, six with their own headquarters. Crondall Scout Centre is a large headquarters with a small camp site attached.

Petersfield District consists of the town of Petersfield and the surrounding rural area.

Romsey District consists of the town of Romsey and the surrounding rural area.

[edit] Rotherfield

Rotherfield District was created by combining Alton and Alresford Districts. As well as including these two towns, it also includes the surrounding rural area such as Medstead, Bordon, Four Marks, Headley, Bentley, Blackmoor & Whitehill, Ropley and Alresford & Cherition.[8]

Silchester District is situated north of Basingstoke and includes the villages and rural areas surrounding Kingsclere, Tadley and Bramley.

Southampton City District consists of the centre, west, north of Southampton City including Millbrook and Lordshill.

Waterlooville District is a large geographical District with ten Group Headquarters within an area of 24 square miles.

Winchester District consists of the ancient capital and the villages and rural area surrounding it.

[edit] Ferny Crofts

Ferny Crofts, in the New Forest near Lyndhurst, is owned by the county. It provides camping facilities plus indoor accommodation and activities including climbing, shooting, archery and a zip wire.[9]

[edit] Hampshire 007

Hampshire 007 or H007, was a large centenary camp held at New Park near Brockenhurst, over 8,000 Scouts attended, the British Army and Royal Navy visited the camp. The Centenary of Scouting was celebrated in many places in the County during 2007.[10]
