- This article is about the Samuel Beckett character. For the German city, see Hamm.
Hamm is one of the main characters in Samuel Beckett's play Endgame. There are many interpretations of this typically Beckett-esque name, Theodre Adorno has that it is a reference to Hamlet, although this has been denied by Beckett. Others have that he is the hammer to the nails Nell and Nagg (German for nail=Nagel...), and Clov (clou is French for nail). Hamm can also be seen as the son of Noah, the original justification for slavery, and therefore the biblical master of his slave Clov. It has also been suggested that Hamm's soliloquys cast him as a ham actor.
