Hamfast Gamgee
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hamfast "The Gaffer" Gamgee is a fictional hobbit in The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien. He married Bell Goodchild, with whom he had six children, including Samwise Gamgee, and lived at number three Bagshot Row in the Shire. He was a gardener on the Baggins property at Bag End for many years. He was frequently consulted for his knowledge of root vegetables, generally over a pint at The Green Dragon, an inn at Bywater.
Early in The Fellowship of the Ring, he unintentionally tells a Nazgûl that Frodo had left Bag End, putting Frodo in danger. He also plays a minor role in The Return of the King.
His son Samwise named one of his children after Hamfast. For that Hamfast Gamgee, see the list of Hobbits.
