Hameed Haroon (October 23, 1952– ) is a Pakistani businessman and CEO of the Dawn Group of newspapers,and grandson of Sir Abdullah Haroon.He was born in Karachi to a politically influential and financially strong Sindhi family. After his primary education at the Karachi Grammar School, he moved to London, UK, and did his BSc (Hons) in economics from the London School of Economics. He did his MA in regional studies (East Asia) from the Harvard University, US; an MA in political economy and another MA in economics from Boston University, US. Hameed is known as a supporter of many cultural and social causes, including the restoration of the Mohatta Palace in Karachi. His historic residence, Seafield, is located on a road named after his grandfather, Sir Abdullah Haroon.He speaks very good Mandarin,and likes cultural stuff of China,Japan,Italy, India and all things Sindh. He has a formidable collection of Pakistani art, Colonial images of the Subcontinent,shawls,carpets, Sea_shells and a library spilling over with 40,000 books. After his father's death he joined publishing world as Director Administration for the Dawn group and became CEO in 2 years. He is reason for restoration of both the Mohatta Palace and the Hindu Gymkhana. He co-curated exhibition in the history of Pakistan Sadequain The Holy Sinner.

Together with Hameed Akhund he has worked tirelessly to promote Sindh's sufi heritage, and is deeply involved in breeding and rehabilitating Sindh's wildlife. He is also responsible for the herds of deer that now run through Karachi's Safari Park.

He has been in charge of Dawn for last 20 years. He has also written a book on Sadequain. Hameed has already moved on to his next three projects: creating a photo archive and exhibition of Lt. Col. Robert Southey's images of Balochistan from 1880-1911; the Nurjehan project which entails compiling around 10 volumes with a total of 60 CDs, accompanied by song books, translations, images and biographies of the songwriters and directors who influenced a whole generation. The house has always been a venue for intellectual and political discourse with notable guests including Quaid-e-Azam Mohammed Ali Jinnah and Faiz Ahmed Faiz.

Hameed has continued this legacy and hosts parties and events that are legendary for their esteemed audiences and off-track themes.The CDs will include some extremely rare recordings, including Sindhi kafis.Following on from 'The Holy Sinner' exhibition and book, is a series of educational documentaries about Sadequain's art vision in Urdu and English as well as a documentary on Sadequain. Also, in the pipeline is a project to take the State Bank's Sadequain paintings and murals, restored to their pristine glory, with Sadequain's other Paris period work to exhibit in Paris. Hameed is also working with State Bank Governor, Ishrat Hussain, to turn the old wing of the State Bank building into an art gallery, to house Sadequain's work along with the bank's other art treasures. Mr Haroon studied at the London School of Economics and Harvard University. Early in his career, he was a presenter on an investigative program on Channel 4, and worked as an underground correspondent for the Guardian newspaper in Pakistan’s Baluchistan province during the insurgency in the mid-seventies. He was conferred the Italian Order of Merit for his outstanding contribution to “artistic, historical and cultural patrimony, besides his social awareness” in 2006. [1] Mr Hameed Haroon is also a member of the Citizens Group on Electoral Process, constituted by the Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Transparency (PILDAT) which will monitor the national elections in late 2007/early 2008. Mr Haroon is publisher of the daily Dawn, the daily Star, monthly Herald, monthly Spiderand Aurora.
