Talk:Halong Bay
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
FYI, I deleted the reference to Cassandra (the character in Wayne' World) being born in Ha Long Bay. Cassandra speaks (and Wayne learns)Cantonese, which is not a native language of North Vietnam. It is, however, a native language of Kowloon Bay, Cassandra's actual birthplace. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.194.55.254 (talk) 05:53, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Etymology
The name "Ha Long" (descending dragon) is a fairly recent name, first appearing in French nautical maps in the late 19th century. According to the Francophone Haiphong News, dragon-like creatures were sighted in the region several tines by a French captain, in 1898, 1900, and 1902). It is because of the French association of these creatures with the Asian dragon that the modern name originated. During Chinese rule, the area was known as Lục Châu and Lục Hải. During the reigns of the Ly, Tran, adn Le dynasties, it was known alternately as Hải Đông, An Bang, Vân Đồn, Ngọc Sơn or Lục Thủy.
The current etymology section reads like folk etymology with no basis in fact. DHN (talk) 22:51, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
