Didn't Windows (and probably some other operating systems) have a HAL before this thing, even if it did the same thing? --CCFreak2K 09:28, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Windows NT - and other operating systems - have hardware abstraction layers, but they don't do the same thing as the freedesktop.org HAL; they exist at a much lower layer. The name chosen by freedesktop.org can be a bit confusing, for that reason. Guy Harris 17:53, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
