Halesite is a hamlet (and a census-designated place) on East Neck on the North Shore of Long Island in Suffolk County, New York, United States. Generally thought to have been named after Nathan Hale, a captain in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. However, the name was coined when the US Postal Service was building a sub-station post office in Huntngton during the 1920's, and they determined that the intended name of Huntington Harbor, NY was too long to fit on the building, so Halesite was agreed upon as an appropriate name for the Hamlet. There is no record of Nathan Hale having been in the area known as Halesite, but there is a rock with a tribute to him at the intersection of Mill Dam Road and New York Avenue. The population was 2,582 at the 2000 census.
