Is it really "eight cords, one roof"? I thought it was "eight corners, one roof." --Ggeller (talk) 01:19, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

"corners of the world" is a western idiom. The kanji literally transliterates to "cord", and this translation is also used in a number of English language sources, such as Huffman, James (2006). However, the «eight corners» is generally used by historians such as Bix, Wetzler and Edwards as it gives a better understanding of the true meaning of the word. The same is true of sankō sakusen which could be translated litterally as «operation three lights» but is translated as «operation three alls». --Flying tiger (talk) 17:27, 24 December 2007 (UTC)
