[edit] Administrative divisions

Hai Duong city was established in 1084, and was first called "Thanh Dong", referring to the citadel to the east of Vietnam's capital of Hanoi. During the French colonial period, Hai Duong was a township. Before 1968, Hai Duong was a township of Hai Duong Province, and from 1968 to 1996 was a township of Hai Hung Province, because Hai Hung Province was merged Province of Hai Duong and Hung Yen Province at that time. On November 6, 1996, Hai Duong became the capital of Hai Duong Province as had been before. On August 6, 1997, the city of Hai Duong was established.
