[edit] Billy Joel Lyric

Is anyone positive the line in the song "Movin' Out" is actually referring to Hackensack, New Jersey? ...I live in Jersey, and I can tell you, no one would refer to Hackensack as "out in Hackensack," especially from Billy Joel's perspective, which is New York, usually. I only ask because Hackensack, NJ doesn't really fit the picture Billy Joel is trying to paint in that song...and there's a Hackensack, Minnesota, and I have relativs who've been there, and say it's kind of middle-of-nowhere-ish. Just thought I'd bring this up. (Isn't there a killer skate park in your town, by the way? I think I've been there a few times...) --Wild One 04:44, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

I grew up in River Edge, next to Hackensack, and I'm close to Joel's age. I went to summer camp with New Yorkers and I swear, they acted like Jersey was out in the boonies somewhere. Joel sings the song from the 1950's New York City immigrant working class perspective, when getting a house out in Hackensack — which still had a lot of nearby farmland — was a status move, and an isolating one at that. So was moving out to Long Island, but the lyric wouldn't have the same kick. NjtoTX 00:23, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
