[edit] History
The restaurant began with the marriage of Jim and Kitz Masterson in 1939. The restaurant was located at the corner of Lake and Waukegan Road in Glenview, where a bar was located on the main floor and living areas upstairs. Aunt Bebe, and her husband, Jack Hackney, relatives of the Masterson family started up a restaurant and bar by themselves. Their small farm house on Harms Road in Glenview served beer and corned beef sandwiches. Aunt Bebe died in the 1930s. The property was offered up to Jim Masterson, who quickly started running the business with his wife at his side. Jim and his wife Kitz had seven children, who eventually became extremely interested in the family business. With the onslaught of Masterson children wanting to partake in the family business, more restaurants were opened. The Mastersons bought Behm's on Milwaukee Avenue in Wheeling, Poppe's Alpine House in Lake Zurich, The Matterhorn in Palos Park, and Moonraker in the South Loop of the City of Chicago.[1] The Masterson family now owns six Hackney's in the Chicago area.
[edit] Menu items
[edit] Famous Hackney Burger
Out of a small kitchen with four burner plates the Hackney Burger was created. The half pound of meat was originally cooked on ten-inch black iron frying pans. The burger was then laid in between two pieces of Aunt Bebe's homemade rye bread. The Hackney burger and rye bread are still freshly made by business strictly for Hackney's restaurants.
[edit] The Blue Cheese Burger
The blue cheese burger incorporates blue cheese crumbled into its patty. The burger is then topped off with melted blue cheese on the top of the patty, and a choice of the original rye or a bun. The burger is accompanied by fries and coleslaw.
[edit] The Inside-Out Burger
The inside-out burger is made with a half pound of beef stuffed with sharp cheddar cheese and bacon. The burger is made by first covering a mayonnaise lid with clear plastic wrap. The lid is filled with a quarter pound of beef. The beef is then covered with the cheddar and bacon. Finally, it is topped with the other quarter pound of beef and grilled.
[edit] The Onion Brick
The onion brick is created with cutting fresh onions, a mix of secret ingredients, and flour. It can be ordered as a full brick or half.
