IMDb profile |
Hack/Slash is an upcoming 2008 horror action thriller based on the comic book series of the same name created by Tim Seeley and Stefano Caselli. The comics focus on the character of Cassie, a horror victim, who eventually strikes back at the monsters, known as "slashers", with Vlad, her enigmatic muscular and gas mask wearing partner. Hack/Slash was pitched as a cross between Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Scream, playing on the concept of a "surviving female protagonist in a horror film, like Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street, transformed from being a victim to being a badass."[1] (see final girl)

[edit] Production
In 2004, creator Tim Seeley confirmed there was partial truth to a rumor that suggested the character of Cassie would make an appearance in the sequel to Freddy Vs. Jason. She would battle against the two title characters. Seeley noted that "it would [be] a logical extension of a 'Hack/Slash' movie or even as something that could be done first, then rolled into it's own movie", however, "nothing definite."[2] Since then, the film has taken a different direction apart from the Freddy Vs. Jason franchise.
Rogue Pictures picked up the film rights in the spring of 2006.[3] Writer and director Todd Lincoln had been interested in adapting the comic into a film since its first appearance in comic book stores. When he pitched the idea to Hack/Slash publishers Devil’s Due Publishing, however, he learned that the rights had already been gained by producers Daniel Alter and Adrian Askarieh. Alter and Askarieh had been fans of Lincoln's work, eventually approaching him for the director's role, even before they had known of his interest in the film.[4]
According to Lincoln, who co-wrote the script with Martin Schenk, the script for Hack/Slash is still in development. The plot for the film will introduce a new storyline in the Hack/Slash series.[5] According to Lincoln the film will "stay true to the style, heart and voice of the comics" and he is adamant that "Fans are absolutely going to get the Cassie and Vlad they know and love." The film will have a much more serious tone than the comics, opting to remove some of the humor to create a "lean, vicious, blood-soaked, hard R fright fest" and "the ultimate slasher film."[6] Hack/Slash will utilize practical effects instead of CGI.[4]
If that film were to be successful, producer Daniel Alter said that the film has "potential to be a great horror franchise".[1]
In a January 2007 interview with Lincoln, he had stated Hack/Slash would begin filming in late Spring 2007.[4] The film has yet to begin shooting, but another source claimed that Hack/Slash would have begun filming in August or September 2007.[7] A theatrical release date for the film was also set for Halloween 2007, however, the date has since been pushed to Spring 2009.[8]
[edit] Casting
Although no official casting has been confirmed, the writers stated that, "Cassie will be a real American girl, vulnerable and sympathetic."[5] Actress Megan Fox has been rumored to star as Cassie,[9][10] and in July 2007, Fox was purportedly "really interested" in portraying Cassie in the film adaptation as well.[11] Michael Clarke Duncan has been reported as Lincoln's first choice to portray the character of Vlad, Cassie's sidekick.[7]
