[edit] Re:KkKeeling
Hi - its a good point but his userpage states his name is "Josh Keeling." I recommend you message him about WP:USERNAME and advise him to change his name. But as he has clarified his real name we can't block him. Similar case occured a few months ago with user:ARYAN818. We must not jump the gun, Rama's arrow 15:42, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Just so you know, Simonapro has been indefinetely blocked. Addhoc 16:52, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
- I did not realize that, no block template. Thanks for letting me know. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 17:47, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
First he created this page Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/Chondrite, accusing Chondrite of being a sockpuppet of a much more experienced user, then I reported him to the incidents page for threats [5]. I have just written to him [6] trying to encourage him to chill out and come back. I am no fan of the disciplinary procedures here and it is a shame it has led to this but he seemed beyond reasoning to me and threats only put people off editing here, SqueakBox 18:06, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
- I think you did the right thing. It is too bad the user had been blocked, but it needed to be done. I hope that if the user is unblocked that he will make usefull contributions, and respect consensus even if it goes against him. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 18:11, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

- Thank you both for your efforts to reason with Simonapro. I think it's very unfortunate that the situation degenerated to the point where a block was necessary. If you have any advice on how I could have handled the situation better, I'm receptive. Thanks again, Chondrite 23:06, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
- Chondrite, you have handled this situation in a manner befiting a veteran Wikipedian. You remained calm and polite in the face of obstinance. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 23:22, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks
Thanks for the warm welcome! I'll get to work on uploading those images. Kochdude388 00:22, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
- One more question: I took the picture for a character page (of the character directly from a film), would that be considered copyrighted material? Kochdude388 00:54, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
I am not certain, I would need more detail. If you were actually there and took the picture of the character in person then it belongs to you as long as you were not on private property(once again I am not certain). If you are making a copy of an image someone has made before then copyright is a concern. If you give me more specifics on the situation, then I can give you more specific advice. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 01:10, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
- I was watching a DVD on my TV and I took a picture of an animated character on-screen. Kochdude388 21:15, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
That is still copyrighted, and cannot be released to a free license. However, if you can meet the fair use criteria then that may allow the image. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 21:45, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Peter Singer quote
without context I don't see how this statement has to do with ethics, it is not an ethical arguement but more of a mission statement "Christianity is our foe. If animal rights is to succeed, ....
- That's a fair comment. I think that making the reader aware of Singer's attitude toward Christianity has a legitimate place in the article, but I agree that it seems a bit "bolted on" as written. What sort of context do you think would be appropriate? Waitak
Thanks for discussing this. The quote: Christianity is our foe. If animal rights is to succeed, we must destroy the Judeo-Christian Religious tradition.
The source given, does not give a context. As for what type of context I would feel warrents inclusion, is showing how this is an ethical arguement.
Right now the quote(one chosen by a blog, not a wikipedian reading the book) is a statement that says "These guys are our enemies. If we are to succeed we must destroy them.". There are no ethical arguements contained in the quote as is. It is possible that the text of the book explains how this relates to ethics, but the blog page does not(nor would it's interpretation of the book be a reliable source). I hope I have explained myself better than I did in the limited edit summery space. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 15:43, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Edit conflict at RfA
You were quick with that correction! I had written this:
- Neither Joseph Ferdinand of Bavaria, Prince of Asturias nor Charles II of Spain are living people. At least I hope they aren't... Please feel free to modify your suggestion to ObRoy. :-) NB. I don't agree with ObRoy's characterisation of those diffs, if those are the diffs he meant.
...and then got an edit conflict with your edit correcting your link to 'LIVING' to 'CITE'. :-) Carcharoth 15:48, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] User:216.56.2.62
Hi! You removed User:216.56.2.62 from the AIV list inbetween me going and blocking the user and getting back to AIV to remove them, so I thought I'd explain why I blocked them. They were blocked for 50 days on October 5th (the latest is a long line of blocks), which expired about 4 days ago, and they're already back vandalising. It's almost certainly the same user, so I blocked for a month. I'll recommend an indefinite block if they keep going once that month's up (if I notice). --Tango 23:33, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
- No problem, I often err on the side of caution. Keep up the good work. Although you blocked for 6 months, not one. But that is probably for the best since 50 days did not work. I will remember to read the block history before being lenient. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 23:36, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

- Sorry, yes 6 months. It seemed a good next level up after 50 days. I'm not sure why I said one month... --Tango 00:07, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

What is wrong with the licence of the chess pieces? I got permission of the copyright owner by email. Bubba73 (talk), 00:10, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- It was marked as For Wikipedia only, we need a license anyone can use. It is possible that it was marked improperly. If you can get a confirmation that it has a compatable license I will gladly undelete it, it is a wonderfull picture. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 00:12, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- I will look further... I see, you got permission, but Wikipedia only permission is not enough, see Wikipedia:Requesting_copyright_permission#For_images for details on how to qualify this image. Sorry about that, but copyright laws can really hurt if you ignore them. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 00:16, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

I have attached an image from The House of Staunton archives of the original Staunton chessmen, circa 1849. Again we would appreciate acknowledgment for the images.

Thanks for the details, this is not enough unfortunatly, as it does not state what type of permission is being given.
We need the following rights for inclusion:
- Modification
- Redistribution
- Use for any purpose, including commercial purposes.
The only restrictions allowable are proper attribution of the creator and the requirement that derivative works are similarly licensed.
This is more than is legally required, but our goal is to create a free encyclopedia so we require extra freedom in the content we use. Permission can be sent to permissions-en@wikimedia.org which will hold the email as evidence.
Thank you for contributing this, I hope it works out. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me)
- OK, I'll ask for more specifics on the rights. In the meantime, the link you sent asked for a link to the image, here it is. Bubba73 (talk), 00:29, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
Thank you, we really appreciate people going and talking copyright owners into releasing their images into a compatable license. It helps us alot. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 00:31, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- I just sent the email asking for the rights you listed. It might be tomorrow before I hear back. Bubba73 (talk), 00:37, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

- PS, I originally asked only about Wikipedia:
Could I have permission to use one of your images of a Jaques set, probably this one: http://www.houseofstaunton.com/Jaques/Millennium.JPG on Wikipedia, www.wikipedia.org? I would like to use it to illustrate the Staunton pattern and on the article about Jaques. Thank you.

Thank you for your help with the Feed Me Bubbe site. I am new to wiki and made sure to wait until there was a form of notability. Thank you again and any advice you can give is appreciated.
also how do you do a CC-nc-sa, which requires non-commercial use only and is that allowed for placing an image up? -Chalutz
- Our stated goal is to create an encyclopedia that can be copied for any purpose including commercially. The only restrictions on an image license we allow are:
- Attribution requirement(we will give you credit)
- Requiring derived works to be the same license(so if we make a new version based on yours we still give you attribution)
- Unfortunatly non-commercial only images are incompatable with our project. If you decide to release it to a compatable license, rememeber, anyone will be able to use it for anything, and this permission cannot be revoked. Thanks. HighInBC (Need help? Ask me) 18:21, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
