In reference to Tool's "H", there is also an explanation that appeared a long time ago on the now-defunct website innuendocornecopria.com. As the site was dedicated to finding the multiple interpretations of Tool's songs, the one explanation that was provided for "H" involved the element Hydrogen. This element appears on the Periodic Table of Elements as "H", which would explain the title. It is also one of the most unstable elements found on the table, and presents two casted contradicting statements:

-- The instability of the element Hydrogen as compared to the instability of life. This works, as the protagonist of the story speaks during the choruses that "I am too committed to slip away, fade away, take away. I still feel you changing me", showing his instability.

-- The instability of the element Hydrogen as compared to the instability of the Roman Catholic church's views. The song involves many lyrics that can be taken in a Biblical sense, like "..and as the snake was drowned, there's a look in your eyes. My fear begins to fade, recalling all of the times I could have tried then. I should have died then" or "looking to turn the piss into wine" and the protagonist being "totally void of hate", all referencing to different forms of the stories of Adam, Eve, and the Apple of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden, as well as Jesus Christ's commonly accepted ability to turn water into wine.

There is also a second level that can support the idea of metaphorically using the element Hydrogen in the songs, as the music sways constantly back and forth from calm and sullen to harsh and ferocious, showing a form of instability in the music itself. The climatic ending is also of major significance, as the breakdown before the final set of lyrics changes with cymbal rides and a subsequent drum rolls showing the final blast of energy from the element Hydrogen. To a good listener, you'll also notice that the drums are hit harder than in any previous portion of the song, giving an impression that the instability has driven to a point of possible finality.

Listen to the lyrics of this song very carefully and it will make sense or at least more sense than what I have read so far.

Think of a drug when you read the following.

"What's coming through is alive."

"My blood before me begs me open up my heart again and I feel this coming over like a storm again"

"I am too, connected to you to slip away, to fade away, Days away I still feel you touching me, changing me, and considerately killing me"

Clearly a plausible explanation or reasoning behind his motives for wrtiting such an emotional song.
