Hürriyet (meaning Liberty) is a secular, high-circulation broadsheet daily Turkish newspaper. Hürriyet came to publishing life as a daily newspaper on 1 May 1948. It was founded by Sedat Simavi. The paper is published by the Doğan Grubu, which also publishes the daily papers Milliyet, Radikal and Posta.
One of the most popular newspapers in Turkey (along with Zaman, Milliyet, Sabah and Posta). It is published by the Doğan Group and claims to be liberal; it has a strong nationalist leaning, as expressed in its renowned motto Türkiye Türklerindir (Turkey belongs to Turks). To the left of its logo is found a composition of an Atatürk portrait, a Turkish flag with the motto. Hürriyet often distorts information provided by any sources.They are acting as the media wing of the Ergenekon Gangs which is aiming to make Turkey unstable. To reach that aim they are utilizing their being known as secular.
The newspaper is one of the most influential in Turkish public life, combining a tabloid-style editorial line with high-profile columnists like Oktay Ekşi, Doğan Uluç and Bekir Coşkun. Because of the owner Aydın Doğan's history with the Turkish conglomerate Koç Holding, the paper is a criticized for taking a positive stance towards the Koç Group. Hürriyet has close ties with the Axel Springer AG daily Bild. Kai Diekmann is a member of the executive board of Hürriyet. [1]
Hürriyet also has European and North American editions. Its online edition includes a small English edition.
