Hückeswagen Castle

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hückeswagen Castle is the castle of the town of Hückeswagen in the Oberbergische Kreis, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

It is first recorded in the year 1189. Today (2005) it accommodates municipal offices and a museum of local history.

The keep is known as the "Schelmenturm". This part of the castle was built in the first third of the 13th century. The oldest depiction of the castle, by Erich Philipp Ploennies in the 18th century, shows the "Schelmenturm" as having a height of some 23 metres, which is much higher than it is now. The height of the tower was reduced in the early 19th century, during rebuilding and renovation. The picture is taken from the footpath from the "Bahnhofstraße" to the castle.
