Héctor Villaverde Afu was born in Havana, Cuba, in January 29, 1939. He develops the Graphic Design and Illustration. Since 1953 to 1956 he studied Commercial Drawing in Havana, Cuba. And between 1967-1968 he studied Graphic Design in the Academia Superior de Bellas Artes, Warsaw, Poland. Between 1963-1967 he was Graphic Designer. Consejo Nacional de Cultura (CNC), Havana, Cuba. In 1979 he was Member of the International Jury for the Official Poster of the Olympic Games Moscow 1980, Moscow, Russia In 1987 he was Special Guest. Lahti VII Poster Biennale, Lahti, Finland.

In the sixties he exhibited "Poemas murales. La zafra". Illustrations de Héctor Villaverde y José M. Villa. Havana, Cuba. In 1989 he presented "Héctor Villaverde. Diseño Gráfico" . Palacio del Segundo Cabo, Havana, Cuba.

He also formed part of many collective exhibitions: In 1965 he participated in the First Bienal de Artistas Noveles. Centro de Arte Internacional, Havana, Cuba. He also participated in the IV (1970), V (1972), VII (1976), IX (1980), X (1982), XI (1984), XIII (1988) and XV (1992) Biennale of Graphic Design. Brno 1970. The Moravian Gallery, Brno, Sloven. In 1979 he was one of the selected artists for "Testimonianza dell'Arte Grafica di Cuba" . Galleria La Medusa, Rome, Italy. In 1981 and 1985 he was included in the Lahti IV Poster Biennale. Lahti Art Museum, Lahti, Finland.

During his artistic life he has been awarded with important distintions like the First Prize in political poster at the 41 Salón Nacional de Carteles Cubanos, Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Havana, Cuba, 1966. In 1989 he obtained the Honorable Mention. (International Book Fair IBA), Leipzig, Germany. In 1991 he was also recognized with the National Prize in Design (Graphic Design).
