Gymnazium Andreja Vrabla is a gymnasium or grammar school in Levice, Slovakia. It was named after Andrej Vrábel (1910-1991), a Slovak pedagogue teaching mathematics.

The main building (see picture), but without the left and right wings, was originally built in the 19th century. The main building was enlarged mainly to the back in the late 20th century, to provide more space for students. Currently the building supports approximately 20 classes and laboratories.

[edit] History

The first school year started on 5th November, 1815, when 135 students enrolled. It quickly gained a good reputation throughout Hungary.

The main school language was Latin. After the revolution in 1848 and 1849, the Austrian Government stated that the only school language would be German or Hungarian. This was not easy to cope with, and the school was declared bankrupt in 1850. After a year, it reopened, but the education it provided was only for 4-year study periods.

Soon, it was clear that the school was not large enough. So, on 8th June 1885, with a budget of 47 000 gold-coins, the foundation stone for a new building was laid.

The building successfully survived both World Wars. It was used as a hospital during this time. In 1945, reconstruction began. Both wings were built, and a whole new block was added to the back of the building.
