GWR 1600 Class
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Great Western Railway (GWR) 1600 Class is a class of 0-6-0 pannier tank steam locomotive. Despite being a pure GWR design, all 70 were built by the Western Region of British Railways. When the last member of the class was built in 1955 (1669) the basic design was over 80 years old! Life expectancy was short with 1669 only lasting ten years, but some class mates being scrapped even sooner. One, 1638, survives.
They were based on the 2021 Class built from1897 onwards and themselves a simple enlargement of the 1874 Armstrong designed GWR 850 Class. BR gave them the power classification 2F.
