Gwern is the son of Branwen and Matholwch in the Second Branch of the Mabinogi (A collection of prose stories from medieval Welsh manuscripts). His Welsh mother is not popular with the Irish people, leading her husband to mistreat her; she sends for her brother Bran the Blessed for help. He comes to the rescue, and to avoid war Matholwch offers to step down as king in favor of Gwern. At the feast celebrating the boy's investiture, Gwern is killed when his uncle Efnisien throws him into the fire, and a devastating war breaks out that kills all of Ireland save five pregnant women, and all of the British army save seven warriors.
