[edit] Early life
Berryman was born in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland.[2] His father is an engineer[2] who worked on the Channel Tunnel and currently works with Adrian Hemming. At age eight, he began to learn to play the recorder.[2] The family moved to Kent, England when Berryman was twelve. There, he attended Kent College, a prestigious private school. Berryman was never a sportsman during his schooling life, as he never liked sports. He spent his time in school playing the trumpet and eventually in the school band; he also had a teenage stint in the band Time Out.[2] He has been playing bass guitar since he was sixteen. He grew up on funk and groove music and collects rare editions of those records.
[edit] Coldplay
As Berryman started an engineering degree at University College London, he somehow heard rough versions Chris Martin's songs, and, drunkenly, approached him in the student bar demanding to be admitted into the "band", which then consisted of Martin and his best friend Jonny Buckland.[2] Soon after, he dropped out of his engineering course and switched to a seven-year architecture program.[2] He dropped out of his architecture degree after one year to focus on playing bass with Coldplay. While his bandmates were still continuing their degrees, Guy worked as a barman in a local London pub.
He plays bass in the band.
In their 'Twisted Logic' tour for the promotion of their third album X&Y, Guy had decided to take candid pictures of the band with disposable cameras and throw them to the audience during their live shows.[3]
[edit] Music and contributions
Berryman's musical influences include James Brown, The Beatles, Kool & The Gang, Pink Floyd, Lyn Collins, Maceo Parker and The JBs.
He is also known as the 'Dark Horse' of the band, mainly because he is the quietest of the lot and he does not fancy attention. He is media-shy.
In autumn 2004, Berryman and Coldplay bandmate Will Champion guested on a-ha keyboardist Magne Furuholmen's first solo album, Past Perfect Future Tense. Berryman continued to collaborate with Magne on his second solo album, A Dot Of Black In The Blue Of Your Bliss, released in 2008.
[edit] Personal life
In 2004, Berryman married Joanna Briston, his childhood sweetheart,[citation needed] in a low key ceremony. They have one daughter, Nico, born on September 17, 2006. Briston used to run a clothing shop called Jezebell in London. The opening of the store was attended by bandmates Jonny and Will and their partners. In March 2007, Coldplay's spokesman confirmed that Guy and Joanna separated after three years of marriage.[citation needed]
Berryman is an avid supporter of Raith Rovers Football Club, from his native town Kirkcaldy. He is a big fan of Captain America and the Space Invaders. He is also into fashion and electronic gadgets.[3]
Guy owns a vintage retro style juke box and collects 7" singles to load on to it. He jokes that he knows "every secondhand vinyl shop in every major U.S. city".[3]
According to an article released by MSN UK in April 2008, Guy was the fourth richest man under the age of 30 in the UK, with an estimated wealth of £25 million.[4]
