Gustav, Count of Vasaborg

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Count Gustav Gustavsson of Nystad (April 24, 1616 - October 25, 1653) was an illegitimate son of King Gustavus Adolphus (Gustav II Adolf) and his mistress Margareta Slots.

He entered Swedish military service in the Thirty Years' War in 1633, and received the Diocese of Osnabrück in 1634. He was ennobled with the name Vasaborg in 1637, as his father was of the House of Vasa. He was created Count of Nystad and introduced in 1647, and received Wildeshausen as his own fief after it had been won by Sweden at the Peace of Westphalia, in 1648.

In 1649 he unsuccessfully sought the position of Lord High Admiral in succession of Carl Carlsson Gyllenhielm, an illegitimate son of his grandfather King Charles IX of Sweden. Dissatisfied with the outcome he returned to Germany where he died at Wildeshausen. He lies buried at Riddarholmskyrkan in Stockholm.
