Guruvaar

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Hindi, or the Gujarati language (ગુજરાતી), the term for Thursday, the fourth day of the week.[1] Intriguingly, just like with Thursday in English this word also refers to the fifth planet from the sun, Jupiter (Jupiter is the fifth planet from the Sun and is the largest one in the solar system. It contains more matter than all of the other planets combined.[2]). Guruvaar or GuruVaar is a conjugation of the word for teacher (guru),[1] which is also applied to the fifth planet, and the suffix (vaar) which is the ending used for all the days of the week in Gujarati. Guruvaar literally means the day of Jupiter or Jupiterday just as this is the definition for Thursday.

Guruvaar fasting is very common in Northern India.
