guruji.com was founded by Anurag Dod and Gaurav Mishra,two Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi graduates in 2006 by the backing of venture capitalists Sequoia Capital. It is the first time that India is seeing a "desi" search engine.

Guruji.com is derived from the Sanskrit word for teacher,Guru. The search engine aims at giving its "students"(its users) what they require. guruji.com gives pages from India as search results, thus proving to be a search engine By Indians, for Indians. Guruji.com was launched to the world on October 16, 2006.

- The company has assembled a farm of servers to index the entire universe of Indian websites and is using proprietary algorithms to go deep into the Indian Internet domain and fetch locally relevant results to search queries of Indian consumers.
- At the bottom of the home-page, there is always some tit-bits of information about India(under Gyaan)
- User will be able to see local business listings as well as articles, reviews, blogs, or any other web references made in India.
