Gurney Plaza, touted as Penang's premier lifestyle mall, is a shopping mall located at the famed Gurney Drive promenade in George Town, Penang, Malaysia. It is the second largest shopping mall in Penang after Queensbay Mall and by far the most classy. It was completed in 2001 by one of Southeast Asia's largest property company, CapitaLand. Gurney Plaza houses the biggest cineplex in Malaysia's northern region, the 12-screen Golden Screen Cinemas equipped with THX-certified auditoriums, and second only to Malaysia's biggest cineplex at Mid Valley Megamall in Kuala Lumpur.
Plans are currently underway to add a seven-storey new wing facing Kelawei Road, which is target to complete by end 2008. The extension will add 150,000 sq ft (14,000 m²) of retail space to accommodate a new department store and 83 shoplots, plus 800 new parking bays. This will cause Gurney Plaza to be the 1 Utama of Penang.

[edit] Location
Strategically located at the prestigious Gurney Drive, right in the heart of Penang's tourism district, Gurney Plaza (Gurney Plaza's Website) is set among the lush landscape of Gurney Park, overlooking the sea. With seven levels of retail, leisure, and entertainment outlets, Gurney Plaza is designed as the ultimate one-stop shopping center for locals, a meeting place for business associates and a shopping paradise for tourists. It enjoys quality shoppers' traffic from the posh residential precincts and the nearby hotels.
Gurney Plaza is accessible via Gurney Drive and Kelawai Road. Two levels of parking are available on the basement while another two are available on the 5th and 6th level. - Gurney Plaza is the former site of a sea-fronting heritage building College General, which belonged to the Catholic church.
- The Gurney beachfront has been earmarked for reclamation for the construction of the controversial Penang Outer Ring Road (PORR). Part of the reclaimed land will be used for mixed development. Until the reclamation work is completed and a new beachfront created, the famous beachfront promenade will be lost for many years to come.
- The Gurney Plaza vicinities are notorious for traffic congestion, particularly on weekends when Penangites flock to the beachfront promenade and throng the mall.
- Its main atrium on the ground floor functions as a popular venue for trade fairs and autograph session for many popular regional artists such as S.H.E, Kenji Wu, Lin Junjie, Cyndi Wang and Lee Hom Wang.
