Gurney Drive

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gurney Drive (Malay: Persiaran Gurney) is a popular seafront promenade in George Town, Penang, Malaysia. The casuarina trees lined street is also one Penang's most popular tourist destinations. It was named after Sir Henry Gurney, High Commissioner of Malaya (1950-1951), who was assassinated by the guerillas of the Malayan Communist Party during the Malayan Emergency.

The scenic beaches along Gurney Drive are all but lost to erosion and pollution. More recently, the massive reclamation project at nearby Tanjung Tokong is believed to be the cause of mudflats and sludge. The imminent construction of the Penang Outer Ring Road will also mark the end of this historic beachfront. Reclamation works will be undertaken off Gurney Drive for the construction of the highway and mixed housing and commercial projects.

Gurney Plaza is a very popular shopping centre on Gurney Drive. It is home to popular Malaysian brands and some foreign brands.
