Gurm Sekhon is an elected Councillor of the City of Yarra local government area, representing the Melba Ward, which covers the inner suburbs of Richmond and Burnley in Melbourne, Australia. Sekhon was also, for a time, a state convenor for the Victorian Greens, as well as national convenor for the Australian Greens.[1]
Sekhon was first elected to Yarra City Council at a ward by-election in 2001,[2] and in 2002 became one of four Victorian Greens to win a seat on the council.[3][4] In 2004, following a change in the council's ward system, he was elected to the new Melba Ward.[5] He currently chairs the Council's Human Services and Community Development Committee.
Sekhon has been a Greens organiser and campaigner for many years, having joined the party in 1994.[6] He directed the state election campaign for the party at the 2002 state election, as well as being a candidate for the seat of Richmond at the 2006 state election. He had also worked with the Environmental Defenders' Office and the Victorian National Parks Association.[7]
