Guptipara is a rural town under Balagarh police station in Chinsurah subdivision[1] of Hooghly District in West Bengal, India. Guptipara is under the Pandooah Telephone District Area and the STD Code is 03213.

The first publicly organised Durga Puja was held at Guptipara, when some men were stopped from taking part in a household Durga Puja. Twelve of them formed a committee and organised a barowari (baro means twelve and yaar means friend) puja (worshipping).[3][4] There is a difference of opinion about the year of worship – 1761 or 1790.[5][6]
There are some old temples in the village - Brindabanchandra Temple, Chaitanyadev Temple, Krishna Chandra Temple and Ramachandra Temple.[3] All the structures bear characteristics of the Bengal school of architecture, with fine carvings depicting scenes from the epics and Puranas.[3] The place notable for Gupo sandesh, a special kind of sweet meal.[3]

Guptipara, is now also a modern destination for higher studies. It has two technical colleges, namely Saroj Mohan Institute of Technology - Degree Engineering Division, and Saroj Mohan Institute of Technology - Diploma Engineering Division.[7][8] Numerous students come here to seek technical & engineering education. The Degree Engineering College is handed over to Techno India on and from 1st June 2007. [9]The establishment of Saroj Mohan Institute of Technology (Diploma Engg. Division) in 1999 at Guptipara, Hooghly, was done by Mr.Pradip Kr. Chaudhuri, son of Late Saroj Mohan Chaudhury. The Degree Engineering Division (B.Tech) was established and started from 2003.
[edit] Transportation
The place can be easily reached from Kolkata or Howrah on Sub-urban Train service. Howrah - Katwa, Bandel - Katwa local trains stop at Guptipara Railway station. Train service is also available from Sealdah station, though less frequent in number.[10] Guptipara is also connected with roadways. Visitors can reach Guptipara through Assam Road, but no public transport is available yet in this route. Buses and Trekkers are available from Jirat to reach Guptipara.
