Gunter Arnlaugson

In Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel's Legacy series, Gunter Arnlaugson is a Skaldic lord, head of a steading not far from the border of Camlach in Terre d'Ange. He became the lord of the steading by might of arms upon the death of the previous lord, who was father to Hedwig Arnildsdottir. He is a tall man, standing half a head higher than anyone else in his steading, and has a rather abrupt and rude manner, though a good heart.

Gunter is the Skaldi to whom Phèdre nó Delaunay and Joscelin Verreuil are sold by Melisande Shahrizai. He had three times proposed marriage to Hedwig, and been turned down each time. Though he is loud and brash, he is a responsible leader with a very Skaldic sense of fairness; he allows Joscelin to fight in the holmgang, and even bets on Joscelin to win. When he does, Gunter takes him on as a personal attendant and returns his Cassiline regalia. Later, Gunter gifts Phèdre and Joscelin both to Waldemar Selig in order to win favor with the new King. After the Battle of Troyes-le-Mont, Phèdre does not find him among the dead, and hopes that he escaped safely back to Skaldia.
